Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports. Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes. The two candidates presented starkly different platforms, but Garrett avoided confronting Gussen directly in the campaign. Instead, the Republican congressman's attacks focused on President Obama. Gussen slammed Garrett for his conservative positions on women's health issues and opposition of the Affordable Care Act. He …

But incumbent GOP congressman says issues transcend redrawn boundaries
New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District has been in Republican hands for nearly 70 years, but Adam Gussen -- the Democratic challenger to incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett -- says the district has become “eminently competitive” for his party. Indeed, a recent Bergen County Republican Organization poll shows a tight race — with Garrett ahead of Gussen by only 2 percentage points -- despite the fact that Gussen has relatively little name recognition and funding. Yet the race is not on the national radar; neither party is targeting the race. Garrett has held the seat for the past 10 years, fending off successive Democratic challengers and earning a reputation as the most conservative congressman from New Jersey and one of the most conservative in …

Republican centers attacks on President Obama.
Republican 5th District Rep. Scott Garrett largely ignored Democratic challenger Adam Gussen at a debate Sunday in Mahwah, instead focusing his attacks on President Barack Obama, northjersey.com reported. “I’m not President Obama, and there’s no empty chair for Clint Eastwood to talk to either,” Gussen said, according to the report. Gussen, Teaneck’s deputy mayor, accused of Garrett of backing “big business and special interests” over area families, according to a Jewish Standard report. He pointed to his experience on the Teaneck council and his work in business development with small to mid-sized businesses. On foreign policy, Garrett said Obama was “treating our friends as enemies” and pointed to recent violent in the region, the report…

The following is a letter to the editor from Adam Gussen: Over his years in Congress, Scott Garrett has voted to support the State of Israel on several occasions. He's voted to recognize the Israel on her anniversary. He's recognized her right to defend herself. He's voted to urge Mahmoud Abbas to remove the 10 articles in the Fatah Constitution that call for Israel's destruction and terrorism against Israel. In short, Scott Garrett has stood with Israel on many occasions. However, when Israel's security was actually being threatened, Scott Garrett put partisan politics ahead of the safety of every Israeli man woman and child. In October of last year, Scott Garrett voted against an amendment designed to stop US land from being …

Republican incumbent given about $900,000 from finance, real estate and insurance interests, according to a study.
Donations from financial, insurance and real estate interests made up nearly 56 percent of the more than $1.6 million raised by Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in the current race, a report from the Sunlight Foundation found. Only two other members of congress have received more from financial, real estate and insurance groups in the current election cycle, according to the study. Garrett received a total of $918,038 from the interests. The Sunlight Foundation said the campaign cash buys access. Garrett chairs a subcommittee overseeing financial market regulation, including the Securities and Exchange Commission. “It buys face time at fundraisers and a chance to make sure that members of Congress hear about the concerns of the financial …

Judge rules complaint against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Democratic challenger to Rep. Scott Garrett, can move forward.
A judge has found probable cause to move ahead with a complaint by a longtime political foe of Teaneck’s deputy mayor, in which she accuses the now-Congressional candidate of leaking confidential information about her to the media. Former Councilwoman Barbara Toffler alleges that Adam Gussen, who is running against Republican Rep. Scott Garret in the 5th District, leaked a personnel complaint filed against her by Township Manager William Broughton, and that he shared with a newspaper reporter information about a closed session council meeting in Jan. 2011. "I have evidence which provides probable cause to believe that this confidential information, and in all likelihood the letter itself, was provided ... by Deputy Mayor and Councilman …

Democrat has raised less than $5,000, according to report.
Adam Gussen, Teaneck’s deputy mayor and Democratic congressional candidate, has raised less than $5,000 compared to Republican opponent Scott Garrett’s nearly $2 million in campaign funds, according to a report on LehighValleyLive.com. Gussen, however, expressed confidence he would be able to raise money. "We're going to work to shine the light on (Garrett's) voting record and the positions he's taken," he said, the site reported. Experts quoted in the report noted it would be challenging for the Democrat to get his message out and gather media attention. Gussen won the 5th District Democratic primary. Redistricting moved most of Teaneck into the Republican-leaning 5th District. Garrett’s campaign money has come from groups including …

Adam Gussen decisively defeats Jason Castle and Diane Sare to battle conservative Congressman Scott Garrett in November.
Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen easily overtook challengers Jason Castle and Diane Sare in Tuesday night's Democratic primary and will now square off with Tea Party darling incumbent Scott Garrett. According to unofficial results, Gussen took home 53 percent of the vote with 73 percent of districts reporting as of 10:30 p.m. During the primary campaign, Gussen, 38, cited his experience in one of the county's largest municipalities as one strong reason he could succeed as the congressional representative of the newly drawn 5th district. Gussen, who picked up the endorsement of the county Democratic party, said during the primary campaign he favored creating jobs incentives for businesses, and hopes for complete energy independence. “We …

Field of candidates couldn’t be more different, from the Democrat who wants to impeach Obama to an ex-Marine and a champion pumpkin chucker

By Matt Manochio, NJ Spotlight All three Democrats vying for the right to challenge the conservative Republican who represents the 5th District in Congress may be from Bergen County, but the similarity ends there. There’s a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq. There’s a political organizer who follows the LaRouche movement. And there’s a local elected official who is also a champion pumpkin chucker. The winner of next Tuesday’s primary is going to need to be a champion campaigner to defeat five-term Rep. Scott Garrett, who has $1.8 million on hand to defend his seat. See NJ Spotlight's write-up of the Republican candidates “I think, ultimately, Scott Garret is going to have more money than I will -- but I don’t think that I need to …

By Matt Manochio, NJSpotlight.com U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, the current G.O.P. occupant and a resident of Sussex County, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and appears primed to strongly defend the seat. He faces a primary challenge from two Bergen County residents, Michael Cino and Bonnie Somer, both of whom concede the odds of winning are against them. The Democrats also have a contested primary. Teaneck’s Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, former U.S. Marine Jason Castle and Lyndon LaRouche Democrat Diane Sare are vying for their party’s nomination on June 5. But that contest won’t provide the matchup Republicans had envisioned when they drew the new district lines last December, putting U.S. Rep. Steven Rothman, who …

I, and all of Sussex County, love Garrett's conservative positions on Congressional issues. He was one of the few congressmen who had the guts to vote for oversight of the New Orleans $50 Billion Katrina Debacle, which poured our taxpayer dollars to crooked politicos in LA. I'm a social liberal, atheist, and fiscal conservative who can support Scott Garrett without reservation.   more ›
