Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports. Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes. The two candidates presented starkly different platforms, but Garrett avoided confronting Gussen directly in the campaign. Instead, the Republican congressman's attacks focused on President Obama. Republican 5th District Rep. Scott Garrett largely ignored Democratic challenger Adam Gussen at a debate Sunday in Mahwah, instead focusing his attacks on President Barack Obama, northjersey.com reported. “I’m not President Obama, and there’s no empty chair for Clint Eastwood to talk to either,” Gussen said, according to the report. He's voted to recognize the Israel on her anniversary. He's recognized her right to defend herself. Republican incumbent given about $900,000 from finance, real estate and insurance interests, according to a study.
Donations from financial, insurance and real estate interests made up nearly 56 percent of the more than $1.6 million raised by Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in the current race, a report from the Sunlight Foundation found. Only two other members of congress have received more from financial, real estate and insurance groups in the current election cycle, according to the study. Garrett received a total of $918,038 from the interests. The Sunlight Foundation said the campaign cash buys access. A judge has found probable cause to move ahead with a complaint by a longtime political foe of Teaneck’s deputy mayor, in which she accuses the now-Congressional candidate of leaking confidential information about her to the media. Former Councilwoman Barbara Toffler alleges that Adam Gussen, who is running against Republican Rep. Scott Garret in the 5th District, leaked a personnel complaint filed against her by Township Manager William Broughton, and that he shared with a newspaper reporter information about a closed session council meeting in Jan. 2011. Adam Gussen, Teaneck’s deputy mayor and Democratic congressional candidate, has raised less than $5,000 compared to Republican opponent Scott Garrett’s nearly $2 million in campaign funds, according to a report on LehighValleyLive.com. Gussen, however, expressed confidence he would be able to raise money. "We're going to work to shine the light on (Garrett's) voting record and the positions he's taken," he said, the site reported. Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen easily overtook challengers Jason Castle and Diane Sare in Tuesday night's Democratic primary and will now square off with Tea Party darling incumbent Scott Garrett. He was one of the few congressmen who had the guts to vote for oversight of the New Orleans $50 Billion Katrina Debacle, which poured our taxpayer dollars to crooked politicos in LA.
