Family Offers $25K Reward in Slaying of Bergen Woman

The 2010 killings of two women, in Teaneck and Palisades Park, remain unsolved. Authorities have not said the two deaths are connected.

The family of a 69-year-old Palisades Park woman found stabbed to death in her burning home has offered a $25,000 reward to help solve the more than three year old slaying, authorities said this week. Emergency crews found Dolores Alliotts dead after they responded to a fire at her home early April 28, 2010, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. Investigators determined the house was set ablaze to cover up the killing. "Detectives believe, based on available statistics and evidence, that the killer may have had some prior interaction with Alliotts," Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. "This may have been a brief interaction that would not normally raise suspicion, such as a deliveryman, maintenance personnel, …

Special Needs Residents Honored for Volunteerism

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli recently recognized two borough volunteers for work they've provided his office over the past two years.

Two Fair Lawn volunteers were honored by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office recently at an Adult Volunteer Recognition luncheon. Joanna Stadler and Jacob "Yasha" Kaminer have worked in the prosecutor's office for the past two years through the county's "Careers Through Technology" program, which provides technology-based opportunities for adults with significant physical and/or developmental disabilities. Stadler works in the office’s word processing department and Kaminer assists in the computer division. “Joanna and Yasha are providing valuable services for our office,“ Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a statement. “I am pleased with their contributions during the past two years and recommend this program to other …

Prosecutor's Heroin Probe Nets 2 Fair Lawn Residents

A Bergen County Prosecutor's Office-led probe into heroin distribution in Bergen and surrounding counties resulted in seven arrests in Fair Lawn and two arrests of Fair Lawn residents outside of the borough.

Based on incorrect information provided by law enforcement, an earlier version of this story contained the name of a Fair Lawn woman who was not charged in the heroin distribution investigation. The correct name of the woman who was charged is Victoria Zaretskaya. Two Fair Lawn residents were among the 88 alleged buyers arrested over the course of a four-month investigation into heroin sales in Bergen, Passaic and Mercer counties, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced Thursday. Twenty-seventh Street resident Graham Dooner, 21, was arrested twice in Paramus over the course of one week in early March and Elaine Terrace resident Victoria Zaretskaya, 22, was arrested in April in Hackensack, according to a list of alleged buyers …

More than 160 schools across Bergen County slated for security reviews, prosecutor says.

Officials are set to inspect more than 160 Bergen County schools in an expanded security initiative formed after the Newtown elementary school massacre, the county prosecutor announced Monday. Under a newly formed county task force, police chiefs in towns that requested the safety reviews will designate a police liaison to receive training from the prosecutor’s office and work with school officials to develop a security plan, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.  “This task force system will create a permanent security environment whereby local schools will have a greater access to information and assistance in their efforts to keep our schools safe,” Molinelli said in a statement. The security inspections have been going on …

Lina Martinez, of Clifton, allegedly stole approximately $400,000 from the Saddle Brook fashion design company where she was a partner.

A partner in charge of overseas production at a Saddle Brook-based fashion design company was charged Thursday with pocketing approximately $400,000 in company funds for personal use, the prosecutor's office said Friday. Martinez, a founding partner and designer for Marti Prive International LLC, a producer of high-end swim wear, dresses and lingerie located at Park 80 West Plaza in Saddle Brook, had been responsible for setting up a company clothing factory in Colombia, Bergen …

Prolific Smash-and-Grab Burglar Caught on Tape

The prosecutor's office has formed a task force to stop a serial burglar suspected in some 150 commercial break-ins in more than a dozen New Jersey towns, including Fair Lawn.

West Orange Police have released surveillance footage of a serial burglar who's been terrorizing small commercial business owners and frustrating local police forces for the past three years. In the video, the bearded burglar -- who is suspected in about 150 commercial break-ins across four New Jersey counties since 2009 -- is seen kicking out the glass door of a Chinese restaurant, crawling through the fractured opening, prying free a cash box and then snaking back out the way he entered. Fair Lawn Detective Lt. Michael Uttel said the video depicts the same man who's been burglarizing Chinese restaurants, nail salons and pizza shops in Fair Lawn for the past few years. Uttel attributes a number of the commercial jobs committed this March …

'Occupy' Doctor Had Bomb-Making Chemicals In Ridgewood Basement, Authorities Charge

Authorities raid Union Street home, say they've recover highly volatile bomb-making chemical and assault rifles.

A New York doctor who was active in the Occupy Wall Street movement of 2011 was charged Saturday with possessing a large quantity of chemicals used in bomb-making, hours after authorities conducted a raid on the Ridgewood house in which he lived, officials said. Roberto Rivera, 60, a medical doctor, was charged with recklessly creating a risk of widespread injury or damage after FBI agents and members of the Bergen County bomb squad found precursor chemicals used in the making of explosives, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a release Saturday afternoon. Molinelli called at least one of the chemicals "highly volatile," but authorities did not disclose the names of the chemicals found in the house. Rivera was being held on $1 …

County Police Show Off Underwater Robot as Debate Rages Over Future of Agency

Bergen County Police say the remote control evidence recovery robot is one of only a half dozen in the county and provides a valuable shared service that local municipalities likely couldn't afford on their own.

An underwater robot the size of a microwave has found its way into the crossfire of a divisive county-wide debate. This week, the Bergen County Police Department’s Water Search and Recovery Unit showed off its new SeaBotix LBV-200-4 Mini ROV — a robot designed to assist the 15-person unit in underwater search and recovery. During a demonstration at the lower lake of the Ramapo Reservation in Mahwah this week, BCPD Sgt. Mark Tiedemann showcased the remote-control device, which sends a video feed from underwater to its operator on dry land. County police conducted the demonstration in the long shadow of a debate over whether or not the county’s police department — and its specialty units like the WSAR — will continue to exist on their own or…

Burglars Make Off With Jewelry, Cash From Saddle Brook Home

Saddle Brook has seen an uptick in forcible break-ins in recent weeks, police said.

Burglars made off with approximately $6,000 worth of jewelry and a large sum of cash from a Legregni Street home Tuesday evening, police said. The break-in triggered a home burglar alarm that alerted police, but by the time officers arrived on scene the burglars had already fled, Chief Robert Kugler said. Kugler said the burglars entered the home from the rear yard, smashing through the glass of the back door and reaching in to unlock the door from the inside. Once inside the home, the burglars made their way upstairs and forcibly entered a locked walk-in bedroom closet that contained a jewelry box with cash and valuables, he said. Tuesday's home burglary adds to the increasing number of break-ins that have recently hit both Saddle Brook …

Paul Dombrowski, 40, of Fair Lawn, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated arson and four other counts in connection with a suspicious fire that broke out overnight Monday at a Berdan Avenue home.

A Fair Lawn man has been charged in connection with the suspicious fire that police allege was intentionally set in the basement of an unoccupied single family Berdan Avenue home, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli announced Thursday. Paul Dombrowski, 40, faces five charges including aggravated arson, burglary, failure to report or control a fire, possession of stolen property and theft of movable property. Fair Lawn police arrived at the scene of the fire early Tuesday morning after being alerted by contractors who were working at the home.
