Cosgrove Dispels News Report; Won't Run for State Senate

Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove said there is no truth to a news report that he is on a shortlist of potential Republican State Senate candidates.

Fair Lawn Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove dismissed media speculation Thursday that he would challenge Sen. Bob Gordon in next year's New Jersey Senate race.  "I'm not going to seek nor will I accept that seat. I never even thought about it," said Cosgrove, responding to a Wednesday report on PolitickerNJ.com that tossed out his name as one of four Bergen County Republicans who might take on Gordon in 2013. "I've already called Bob and told him that I'm staying in Fair Lawn." Cosgrove, the lone Republican elected in Fair Lawn last year, said he had no idea why he'd been listed in the report and said his desire is to remain in Fair Lawn to serve out the entirety of his term. In addition to Cosgrove, PolitickerNJ listed former Freeholder John …

Assembly Advances Flood Protection Bill

Towns are required to use the 1980 NJDEP flood map, not FEMA's 2005 flood map. Bill would allow the most current flood map to be used.

Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Connie Wagner and Assemblyman Timothy Eustace to help protect the public from flooding and facilitate smart development will go before the full assembly for approval after being approved by an Assembly panel on Monday.  The bill would require the Department of Environmental Protection to quickly evaluate any newly released FEMA flood maps in order to allow applicants to apply for a permit using the federal floodway delineation when it is at least as protective as the DEP's delineation. Sen. Bob Gordon is the primary sponsor of the senate version of this bill. "Over the years, many flood maps have become outdated due to urban growth, changes in river flows and coastlines, and even flood mitigation …

Wagner Weighs Congressional Run Against Garrett

Decision to come after Assembly reorganization

Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-38) will wait until after the Assembly reorganization on Jan. 10 to decide whether to challenge Congressman Scott Garrett in the newly reconfigured 5th Congressional District, which now includes Fair Lawn. Wagner said she would have to consult her family before committing to she believes would be a difficult race. "Just the campaigning alone would be seven days a week," she said, even before the time commitment and constant travel between Washington and New Jersey that a victory would mean. Wagner also said she wanted to keep pushing for education reform in the state legislature. She lamented the "negative stance" others have taken in making changes, and pledged to continue seeking input from educators on …

Assemblywoman Wagner, please take a position against Abbott and support those who you were elected to represent. Now that you may consider representing a greater area than just District 38, do not abandon those who are paying unnecessarily high taxes in part because you have not spoken out against and erred school funding formula. Here is proof: www.schoolfundingexposed.com It is not fair for you…   more ›

Speeches From Tuesday's Council Re-Organization

A compilation of speeches by council members and other political officials in attendance at the Jan 3. re-organization meeting

Tuesday's re-organization, filled with new and old councilmembers, and decorated county and state dignitaries, provided a number of speeches. Here are a few, transcribed in their entirety (Editor's note: Long lists of thank yous were excluded from the transcribed versions of the speeches): Jeanne Baratta, after assuming the title of Mayor: Fair Lawn is a special town. I know it is. I know because of how many people I went to school with, that my brother and sister know in Fair Lawn, that are still here or chose to come back to Fair Lawn. Many of them are integral parts of our community serving on our phenomenal police force, as volunteers in our fire department, our ambulance squad, our rescue squad and so many other volunteer capacities. …

Two Bills in Legislature to Help Solve Flooding Problem

Bob Schroeder and Connie Wagner joint bill will order reservoirs be lowered during weather emergencies to control flooding; Bob Gordon bill proposes to use Green Acres funding to buy Blue Acres properties

Two bills have been introduced into the New Jersey state Legislature in response to continued flooding occurring throughout northern Bergen County, most recently during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.  The first bill, co-sponsored by Assemblyman Bob Schroeder (R-Washington Township) and Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-Paramus) would order reservoirs be lowered during weather emergencies in order to control flooding. This bill would require action plans for flood-prone reservoirs and authorize the State Office of Emergency Management to order that the owners of reservoirs and dams release water during severe storms as a means to mitigate flooding.  “If we learned anything from the historic storms that have struck this year, it’s that…

Your Candidates: State Senate and Assembly

A new legislative district brings new slate of candidates

After the 2010 census was completed came a statewide redistricting for the senate and assembly in Trenton. And with that came the move of River Edge and Oradell to District 38 and a new group of candidates. State Senate Running for a two-year Senate term is incumbent Robert Gordon (D) and Bergen County Freeholder John Driscoll (R). Gordon, 60 of Fair Lawn, seeks his second term in the Senate. He currently serves on three Senate committees: Environment and Energy Committee, State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee and Health, Human Services and Senior Services Committee. Driscoll, 46, of Paramus, has been a Bergen County Freeholder since 2010 and currently serves as chairman. He serves on the following …

Redistricting has Republicans challenging North Jersey incumbents in a race believed too close to call

By Joe Tyrrell, NJ Spotlight Like the missing scrap from a treasure map dangling just out of reach, the 38th District has Democrats and Republicans scrambling and clawing for the prize. The district covering parts of Bergen County plus Hawthorne in neighboring Passaic County is one of a handful of races considered up for grabs in an off-year election in which most races are routine. As such, it has attracted a line-up of known political quantities, backed by piles of money from both parties. "This is going to be a real nail-biter," said Hawthorne Mayor Richard Goldberg, a Republican Assembly candidate. Redistricting is a key reason why the race is considered so close. While Democrats maintain a registration edge over Republicans, there are…

In 2009 hundreds of residents in Fair Lawn’s Radburn district asked for Senator Bob Gordon's help in sponsoring legislation to require democratic elections and membership for anyone who owns a home in a planned community association. We don’t have that in Radburn. A loophole in current law allows zero accountability by our board and no control by residents over how and where their assessment …   more ›

Election Preview: Tracking the District 38 Contest

Campaign spending records are being set in the two hottest races. The governor is starring in TV ads -- cable and network -- in key districts. So much for a 'status quo' election.

By Mark J. Magyar, NJ Spotlight If you listen to Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic legislative leaders, you would almost assume it didn't matter if you went to the polls to vote tomorrow. Both sides are doing their best to play down expectations of gains by either party in the state legislative elections, and both insist that the election is not a referendum on Christie's policies. But that's just political spin. Campaign spending records are being smashed in the two hottest races. Christie is starring in TV ads in key districts, urging voters to give him Republican legislators who will vote for his policies. And the results of both state legislative and county freeholder races will have implications for the 2013 gubernatorial election. …
