Inside Fair Lawn: Fair Lawn High School Marathon 2013

Videographer Wayne Robbins stopped by the high school on Saturday to capture some of this year's Marathon festivities.

Wayne Robbins, a 1968 Fair Lawn High School Marathon participant, went back to school on Saturday to capture some of the highlights from this year's event, where members of the high school senior class plan an action-packed two days full of continuous games, music and entertainment with the goal of raising money for local organizations. Wayne filmed field games, kickball, volleyball, Jell-O Wars, a splash down at the dunk tank and a whole lot more. He also interviewed some of the people -- teachers, students and parents --who helped make this year's Marathon possible. Proceeds from this year's event will be distributed to the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and the Fair Lawn ADA Committee for the creation of a barrier-free playground at Berdan …

Videographer Wayne Robbins went to Bellezza Salon in Glen Rock on Sunday to film its Annual Cut-a-Thon.

Inside Fair Lawn's Wayne Robbins attended the annual Fair Lawn High School Interact Club's Cut-a-Thon Sunday at Bellezza Salon in Glen Rock. Bellezza's hair stylists volunteered their time to offer hair and beauty services at discounted rates with all sales proceeds going to the family of Sigi Nissimov, the owner of Life Movement Dance Studio in Fair Lawn who died of cancer earlier this year, and the Fair Lawn ADA Committee. Wayne spoke with Bellezza Salon owner Giovanni Carfi as well as Mark Schaefer and Katie Greco, the co-presidents of the Interact Club, to get their takes on this special day they spend each year giving back to the comunity. -- Follow Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Patch on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to receive our …

Fair Lawn Volunteers Build Opportunity Center Garden [PHOTOS]

A variety of volunteer community groups gathered Saturday morning to build a garden for Opportunity Center participants.

Members of the Fair Lawn ADA Committee, the Fair Lawn Garden Committee and Boy Scout Troop 53 joined forces on Saturday morning to build a raised vegetable and flower garden for local adults with developmental disabilities. The groups gathered at 8:30 a.m. outside the Opportunity Center, a day program on Fair Lawn Avenue where special needs adults can participate in activities year round. "The raised height [of the garden] will make it easier for those members to garden and prevent a lot of bending," ADA co-chair Marianne Pettineo explained. The borough provided in-kind contributions of gardening tools and mulch for the project. The Sunrise Rotary offered monetary support and students from Memorial Middle School raised $500 for the garden …

Another great example of the Fair Lawn community in action to help others (and each other). The volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 53, Sunrise Rotary, and ADA Committee members are to be commended. I hope that this fine example of ciivic action gets coverage in the "Community News" to insure that all of our Fair Lawn citizens are informed.   more ›

Community Center Hosts First Dance for Special Needs Teens

Special needs teenagers from across Bergen County are welcome to attend a dance being held Friday, April 5, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fair Lawn Community Center.

The Fair Lawn ADA Committee will hold its first dance for teenagers with special needs Friday at the Community Center from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Until now, the ADA Committee's bi-monthly dances had been open only to special needs adults 21 and over, but increasing demand from parents of special needs teens prompted the committee to hold an event for a younger crowd, committee co-chair Marianne Pettineo said. She said the dance would pair a cadre of teenage volunteers from the Fair Lawn High School National Honor Society, Boy Scouts and St. Anne's confirmation class with the special needs guests to foster positive interactions and meaningful experiences for both groups. The Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention is sponsoring the dance's DJ …

Council Reallocates Skate Park Funds to ADA Playground

Council has elected to reallocate $80,000 in county grants originally intended for the construction of a skate park at the former Walsh Pool to a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove.

Residents eagerly awaiting the return of Fair Lawn's modular skatepark will have to wait a while longer. After backing a multi-phase plan to expedite the transformation of Walsh Pool into a skate park for much of the past year, council abruptly changed course Tuesday and reallocated -- with the county's permission -- all of its skate park grant funding to the construction of a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove. "Berdan has been established as the perfect place [for the ADA playground]," said councilwoman Lisa Swain, who supported the $80,000 fund transfer. "That playground is overdue for a total makeover and we need to think about our residents with special needs, they need a place to go." The reprioritization of funds comes less …

By the way, after a recent council meeting I was told not to worry about Fair Lawn All Sports' plan to destroy the playground at Walsh park, it wouldn't happen for years and my children would be grown by then. So, by "would not renege on their commitment to the Fair Lawn fifth and sixth graders who had requested its construction" I suspect the council means it won't renege, it'll just wait until …   more ›

Chamber Donates to Three Local Organizations

The Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce donated $2,000 to three local Fair Lawn organizations at its Tuesday luncheon.

The Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce made sizable donations to three local organizations Tuesday during its monthly meeting at the American Legion on River Road. The Fair Lawn Fire Department, Fair Lawn Community Center and Fair Lawn ADA Committee each received checks for $2,000 — the proceeds from this year's Chamber golf outing. Chamber president Mary Marrara said it's difficult to select donation recipients with so many deserving organizations in town, but that this year the Chamber's executive board specifically chose to support the fire department in commemoration of its 100th anniversary and the ADA Committee as it raises funds to build a barrier free playground at Berdan Grove.  -- Follow Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Patch on Facebook and …

Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook Kick Off Special Needs Soccer Program [Photos]

The Fair Lawn ADA Committee served as go between for All-Sports and the Saddle Brook Soccer Association to get a soccer league for special needs children off the ground.

Fair Lawn All-Sports and the Saddle Brook Soccer Association kicked off their new joint soccer program for children with special needs on Saturday afternoon at the Dobrow Sports Complex. The eight-week program is intended to introduce special needs children to the sport of soccer and provide them an opportunity to engage in physical activity in a safe, organized and non-competitive environment. Program discussions started in Saddle Brook earlier this year when resident Monica Maniscalco, whose child has special needs, approached one of the township's recreation directors. "She came to me on the soccer field in our town and she said, 'What do we have to do to start a special needs soccer program?'" recreation co-director Renee DeMaria said…
