Fair Lawn Girls Soccer Defeats Hackensack For Third Win This Season

Girls soccer team gets an emotional 4-2 win for ailing head coach John Van Soest.

HACKENSACK–It has been an emotional week for the Fair Lawn girls soccer team. Head coach John Van Soest fell ill and has not been with the team. Before their game against Hackensack (1-13-1), the Cutters (3-11) spoke to Van Soest via assistant coach Harvey Egan's cell phone. "[His message] was simple, but very inspirational," Egan said. "He has never given up on [this team], and feels that they should not give up on themselves." Van Soest's message was simple: he wanted his team to play with passion. And his team "did what he asked," Egan said. The Cutters defeated the Comets, 4-2, to win their third match of the season. "The team has been in kind of a slump," Leanne Marinuk said.
