Teens Find Body Behind Memorial Soccer Field

Three local teenagers found the body of a resident lying face up in the woods behind the Memorial Middle School soccer field last Tuesday, police said.

Three teenagers discovered the body of a man lying face up in the woods behind the Memorial Middle School soccer field last Tuesday while walking along the path that overlooks the field after school, police said. The teens called out to the man from the path, which wraps around the soccer field and behind a half-dozen homes on 2nd Street, but received no response and subsequently notified police, Sgt. Brian Metzler said. Police responded to the scene and identified the man as a 25-year-old Fair Lawn resident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bergen County medical examiner. The man's name is being withheld at the request of his family. The cause of death is still pending investigation, but it is not considered suspicious, Metzler …

Two Children Struck While Crossing River Road

A driver turning left onto River Road from Berdan Avenue struck two middle schoolers walking home from school Thursday, a crossing guard said.

Two Memorial Middle School students were struck by a car while crossing River Road on their walk home from class Thursday, a crossing guard who witnessed the accident said. The girls, ages 11 and 12, were crossing with the light and inside the crosswalk when a car turning left from Berdan Avenue onto River Road struck both of them in the rear, sending one of the girls flying into the air, crossing guard Mel Schultz said. The driver, who said she never saw the kids, immediately stopped her vehicle and got out of the car to tend to the children, who were both knocked to the ground, Schultz said. The girls were shaken up and crying, but did not appear to suffer any serious injuries and walked away from the accident. Officer Timothy Franco, …

I would just like to say that it's unfortunate that it took two kids getting hit by a car to actually get this guy to do his job but He has been standing at his post and even on the opposite corner near Jot Dental actually crossing the kids. I would also like to add that as I was behind a vehicle which was turning onto River Road, in the same manner as the vehicle involved in this incident, the …   more ›

Memorial Middle School Teacher of the Year: Janean Marxen

Janean, 30 is in her seventh year teaching health and physical education at Fair Lawn.

With school just getting underway, Patch will be introducing readers to some of Fair Lawn School District's reigning "Teachers of the Year," as well as district educators who are moving into new roles in the district or who are simply new to the district. Each has been kind enough to answer a few questions we've posed to them about their teaching philosophy and what has informed their approach over the years. Janean Marxen, 30, is a health and physical education teacher at Memorial Middle School and its 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year. She grew up in West Milford and now lives in Ogdensburg with her husband, Jesse, and their dog, Rocky. Janean graduated Magna Cum Laude from William Paterson University in 2006, with a bachelor's in Physical …

New 8-Period School Day Enhances Learning Opportunities

Fair Lawn middle school students have moved from a 7- to an 8-period school day this year

On top of the social rigors that already can make adjusting to middle school life a trying endeavor, Fair Lawn’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders have had to take on an additional academic challenge this school year: more classes per day. Beginning this fall, all of Fair Lawn’s middle schools transitioned from a 7- to an 8-period instructional day. The school day’s length has remained the same, but individual classes and the time in-between classes has been shortened to carve out an additional period. Classes now run for 40 minutes rather than 44 minutes. Among other things, Superintendent Bruce Watson said the move was made to provide more focused instruction time via double-blocked periods for students who are lagging behind …

'Teacher of the Year' Moves On Amid School District Discord

Uncertain about the viability of a career in public education, Peter Goldberg resigned as a Memorial School math teacher shortly after being awarded the school's "Teacher of the Year"

Peter Goldberg was not among the more than 100 Fair Lawn Education Association members who packed the Edison School gymnasium Thursday night to admonish the Board of Education about the teachers’ still-unresolved contract situation. The reigning Fair Lawn Teacher of the Year still supports FLEA’s cause, but he is no longer part of it. Goldberg, 32, resigned from his position teaching mathematics at Memorial Middle School at the end of the last school year. His job’s future prospects had become too precarious, he said. “It was a hard decision because Fair Lawn has always been good to me,” said Goldberg, who spent five years teaching in the district. “But it’s just getting harder and harder to be a teacher, especially in this climate. So …

Memorial School Repairs 'On Schedule'

Memorial School is expected to re-open for class on Monday, Oct. 3

Just about a month after they were originally slated to start there, displaced Memorial students, currently split out at three separate locations across the district, will reunite for Memorial’s re-opening Monday, Oct. 3, following the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Superintendent Bruce Watson said the school’s restoration and renovation work was on schedule, and that next week Wednesday would be the final day that Memorial students would attend classes outside of their designated building. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, extensive flood damage to the school’s boiler room forced the district to delay the start of school and temporarily educate students in various community locations until the school building was suitable for use. Memorial …
