Elmwood Park Man Masturbated Aboard Public Bus, Police Charge

John Lafferty, 43, of Elmwood Park, was charged with lewdness Wednesday after he allegedly exposed himself and masturbated on a New Jersey Transit bus.

An Elmwood Park man allegedly masturbated in the presence of passengers while aboard a public bus passing through Saddle Brook Wednesday, police said. John Lafferty, 43, of Elmwood Park, was arrested and charged with lewdness after he allegedly exposed his genitals and began masturbating on a New Jersey Transit bus traveling down N. Midland Avenue, Deputy Chief Robert White said in a statement. New Jersey Transit police contacted Saddle Brook police at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday reporting that a female passenger had claimed a male passenger exposed himself to her, White said. Alert Neighbor Assists Police in Burglary Arrest

Leonardo R. Castro, 28, was charged with burglary Thursday after a resident saw him breaking into neighbors' cars, Saddle Brook police said.

A Paterson man was arrested on burglary charges early Thursday morning, after a resident observed the man entering his neighbors' vehicles on Elm Avenue, Saddle Brook police said. Leonardo R. Castro, 28, who allegedly led police on a brief foot chase and initiated a scuffle with officers before being detained, was charged with burglary to a vehicle, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental function. An Elm Avenue resident called police after spotting a suspicious man wearing a dark hoodie sweatshirt enter two of his neighbors' vehicles, police said. Saddle Brook Resident Shot in Paterson

Saddle Brook police chief says victim is "lucky to be alive" and should avoid dangerous areas.

A 21-year-old township man is recovering from a gunshot wound he received while in a Paterson area known for high heroin sales, Saddle Brook Police Chief Richard Kugler said Monday. According to Kugler, 21-year-old Michael Burns drove himself to the Saddle Brook Ambulance Corps building at 10 p.m. Sunday suffering from a gun shot wound to the arm. The bullet entered and exited the right arm, barely missing Burns' body again upon exit, Kugler said. He was treated by ambulance corps members and police were contacted. The township resident was in the viscinity of Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson at about 9:30 p.m. when he had an undisclosed altercation with an unidentified black male, Kugler said in a news release.
