Girls soccer team gets an emotional 4-2 win for ailing head coach John Van Soest.
HACKENSACK–It has been an emotional week for the Fair Lawn girls soccer team. Head coach John Van Soest fell ill and has not been with the team. Before their game against Hackensack (1-13-1), the Cutters (3-11) spoke to Van Soest via assistant coach Harvey Egan's cell phone. "[His message] was simple, but very inspirational," Egan said. "He has never given up on [this team], and feels that they should not give up on themselves." Van Soest's message was simple: he wanted his team to play with passion. The 17th-seeded Cutters fell to top-seeded Old Tappan on Saturday, 25-9, 25-14. Fair Lawn's state tournament seed has not yet been announced.

After getting past 16th-seeded Glen Rock in last weekend's first round to earn a date with Old Tappan, the Cutters lost on the Golden Knights' home floor in straight sets, 25-9 and 25-14. Fair Lawn gained valuable experience in defeat, head coach Peter Zisa said. "When you play elite teams, you get an understanding of the complete game you need to play in order to be successful," Zisa said. Fair Lawn's state tournament seeding will be announced this coming week. Zisa said, "We…

The Cutters lose to neighboring Paramus 42-13.
PARAMUS–The Cutters were unable to pick up their second victory of the season on Friday night, as Fair Lawn (1-6) fell to the Paramus Spartans 42-13. Paramus (3-3) cruised to an easy win by scoring on their first six possessions. After winning the coin toss and electing to receive, senior quarterback John Robertson led the Spartans on a nine play, 56-yard drive. The drive was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by running back Mike Urban. The Cutters had trouble moving the ball, as the Spartans' defense was stout in stopping the run. "Defensively we were able to contain [Fair Lawn] all game," Sabella said. The Villanova-bound Robertson found the end zone at the end of an 84-yard drive on Paramus' next possession. "I'm always trying to …
