Due to the wintry weather conditions and additional outages, both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook public schools will be delaying school Thursday.
UPDATE (6:40 a.m.): All Saddle Brook Schools have regained power and there will be a delayed opening at all schools. Just one day since returning to school for the first time in 11 days, classes will again be jeopardized Thursday in both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook school districts. Both districts have already announced they will delay their openings Thursday due to the wintry weather conditions. Saddle Brook superintendent Kathryn Fedina will make a decision by 6 a.m. Thursday whether to cancel school entirely depending on if the Middle School/High School, Franklin Elementary and Long Elementary have regained power. A winter storm headed toward North Jersey Wednesday afternoon on the heels of Hurricane Sandy has Fair Lawn preparing for more downed trees and wires.
Fair Lawn officials are preparing for the possibility that a winter storm forecast to hit North Jersey Wednesday could quash some of the power restoration gains made in the past week. The borough opened its emergency operations center at noon Wednesday to handle the anticipated influx of calls from residents reporting downed trees and wires in town. The EOC will remain open for at least the next 24 hours, but could be open longer if necessary, emergency management coordinator Ira Marks said. Winter Storm Athena has forced a winter weather advisory for much of North Jersey, with the National Weather Service forecasting snow, sleet and rain for Wednesday and a snowy mix for Thursday. Temperatures are expected to be at or just below freezing Wednesday and in the low 40s on Thursday.
