Going forward, David Gotlib will serve as the FLDO's new president, Joan Goldstein will serve as vice president and Jim Lowenstein will serve as treasurer. Democratic councilmembers Kurt Peluso and Lisa Swain both expressed excitement about the organization's new officers. “I’m excited about the new leadership we have in place for the Fair Lawn Democrats," said Peluso, the former president of the organization. "All of the individuals are volunteers for Fair Lawn in other capacities, and having life-long volunteers will greatly benefit our community." In addition, the Fair Lawn Democratic Municipal …

Fraternal Order Practices Friendship, Charity and Benevolence

The Knights of Pythias are an international non-sectarian fraternal organization with a lodge in Fair Lawn

The New Jersey Knights of Pythias Charity Foundation donated a total of $20,000 to 25 charities Wednesday night at the group’s sixth annual charity presentation, held at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Local donation recipients included the Fair Lawn Ambulance Corps, Fair Lawn Community Policing, Fair Lawn Auxiliary Police, Fair Lawn Community Emergency Response Team, Fair Lawn Community Center, Fair Lawn Community School, Fair Lawn Fire Companies and Fair Lawn Rescue Squad. Despite the fraternal order’s continued generosity, its existence has flown largely under the radar. “It’s really, I think, an untold story,” proud Pythian Barry Winston said. “We don’t do publicity real well and there are not as many of us today as there used to be. …

Council Proposes Naming Neighborhood Park for Vi Etler

Fair Lawn Democratic county committeewoman Violet "Vi" Etler died on Jan. 8 at the age of 83

During her life, Democratic politcal maven Vi Etler's kindness and wisdom made an impression on all those she encountered. In her passing, borough council would like to ensure those memories live on in perpetuity. To commemorate Etler's public service and dedication to the borough of Fair Lawn, the council has proposed naming a neighborhood park in her honor. The park -- bounded by Elliott Terrace and Eberlin Drive -- is within walking distance of the home Etler shared with her husband, Marty. "I’m delighted that we’re able to honor Vi Etler in a way that we’ll all be able to visit and think about her," said councilwoman Lisa Swain, who proposed the dedication. "She was a champion for women," Swain said of Etler. "She was also a champion …

Another example of politicians taking care of themselves. How about naming the park for a hero or someone who gave to the entire community not just a political party.   more ›

It's Official: Swain, Peluso and Cosgrove Win Council Seats

Fair Lawn's Borough Council will have a Republican majority for the first time in more than a decade

Democrats Lisa Swain (3,901 votes) and Kurt Peluso (3,644 votes), and Republican John Cosgrove (3,733 votes) finished as the three highest vote-getters in Tuesday's election, the Fair Lawn Municipal Clerk's Office confirmed late Tuesday night. The winners will join Republicans Ed Trawinski and Jeanne Baratta on Fair Lawn's borough council come January. Democratic Chairman Barry Winston said it will be the first time the Republicans have controlled Fair Lawn's council since 1998. In all, seven candidates vied for the three open borough council seats, all of which are currently held by Democrats.  Swain, Fair Lawn’s mayor and the night's top vote-getter, was the only incumbent running. Neither Deputy Mayor Joe Tedeschi nor Deputy Mayor Steve…

How much more is Trawinski getting paid as a BCIU Commissioner? Funny, when disparaging Ganz for borrowing the money from BCIU for the community center, the Trawinski & Baratta campaign website says this: "The BCIA is an out-of-control, independent authority run by political appointees of Bergen County political Boss Joe Ferriero." So now Trawinski is the political appointee running this shadow …   more ›
