FLHS Teacher Incorporates Music Videos into Special Needs Student Curriculum
Fair Lawn High School music teacher and theater director John Giresi, who created professional-level music videos for cognitively disabled students in the district's Bridges II program last school year, hopes to build on his work again this year.
When Fair Lawn High School music teacher John Giresi was tasked with instructing students from the school’s special needs population for the first time last fall, he set out to provide them more than just a music class. He was determined to offer his students the performance experience of a lifetime. “What began as a small idea,” the student’s primary instructor Doreen Yates said, “quickly evolved into a life-altering experience [for the students].” Giresi, who for more than a quarter-century has directed the school’s most talented singers and dancers in award-winning stage productions, last year decided to focus the theatrical spotlight on a group of students who had never attracted it before. “I wanted to create a kind of public …
