Inside Fair Lawn: Angelman Syndrome Awareness

Wayne Robbins sat down at Empress Diner in Fair Lawn to speak with resident Heather Polyi about supporting her daughter, Lyra, who has a rare neuro-genetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome.

Inside Fair Lawn's Wayne Robbins filmed a chat this weekend with resident Heather Polyi and her family at the Empress Diner about bringing awareness to a rare neuro-genetic disease called Angelman Syndrome. Polyi, who owns the River Road makeup studio, Glam Spot NJ, has a two-year-old daughter with Angelman Syndrome named Lyra. At nearly three years old, Lyra cannot sit independently, crawl or walk, or feed herself. She still drinks from bottles (that she cannot hold) and eats pureed food, Polyi explains on the Facebook page she created for her daughter. Last Friday, as part of the first annual International Angelman Day, roughly 100 participating Ruby Tuesday restaurants around the country partnered with the Foundation for Angelman …

Report: 'Active Shooter' Training Video Available to Bergen Schools

The video depicts two armed shooters breaking into a local school, and aims to teach school officials and emergency workers how to respond, report says

A new 20-minute video that depicts how police agencies, fire departments, emergency responders and school personnel should react to “active shooter” situations in schools is now available to districts across Bergen County, NJ.com reported Tuesday. “Lockdown,” which was produced by the County Prosecutor’s Office and filmed at New Milford High School over a year ago, simulates a two armed attackers breaking into the school with rifles and a homemade bomb, the report says. According to NJ.com, the video shows how two teachers react to the situation differently, and points out which reaction is better, and why. "There have been so many [school shootings], and no two are ever identical," said Bergen County Police Sgt. John LaDuca explained in …

Local Fire Departments Stage Drill at Midland Park Lumber Yard [Photos]

Traffic was affected in Midland Park Sunday morning

Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood and Fair Lawn fire departments were among a number of local emergency responders participating in a live fire drill in Midland Park Sunday morning. Kuiken Brothers Lumber Yard on Lake Avenue between Goffle Road and Cottage Street billowed in smoke while numerous fire departments stretched hoses and sprayed water from atop a number of sky-high fire apparatuses. A smoke machine in a shed simulated the fire in the lumber yard, said Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Van Goor said.  Midland Park, Oakland, Ho-Ho-Kus and Hawthorne's Fire Departments were also on scene Sunday morning. A big thanks to Wyckoff-Franklin Lakes Patch reader Jon Unglert, who was on the scene snapping photos.

Passaic-Side Residents Urged to Evacuate

The Fair Lawn Office of Emergency Management has strongly recommended that all residents living on the Passaic River Basin evacuate their homes by noon Monday

7:00 p.m. -- The torrential downpour wrought by Irene has subsided and the winds, though still strong, are weakening.  Leaves and felled tree branches line most streets, and a few large trees have even been toppled, blocking parts of Midland Avenue, 17th Street and Abbott Road at Fair Lawn Avenue. Homes have also been struck by trees in some parts of town, but the extent of damage is unknown. While some parts of Fair Lawn appear to have escaped relatively unscathed by the hurricane, low-lying areas along the Passaic and Saddle Rivers have not been as fortunate. As of 3:30 p.m., the Passaic River gauge closest to Fair Lawn read 8.25 feet, more than a foot above flood stage. The Passaic’s waters are expected to continue rising until mid-…
