The emergency operations center has taken calls for more than 100 individual trees down and nearly 30 wires down in Fair Lawn since Monday.
Sandy's violent romp through town Monday has left between 5,000 and 10,000 homes without power indefinitely. Although PSE&G has told some inquiring residents that power won't be back until Nov. 5, the company has yet to offer an official timetable on when power will be restored. The utility's website explains that the Nov. 5 restoration date provided to residents is a computer-generated response based on data from past storms. "These [Expected Times of Restoration] are quite accurate during moderate-sized storms," the website claims. "This is not your average storm. Hurricane Sandy has caused unprecedented damage, twice as much damage as Hurricane Irene." According to PSE&G, the expected restoration dates will remain up in the air …

A gas main installation project that has lanes closed on Fair Lawn Avenue and Plaza Road is expected to take multiple weeks, police said.
Traffic near the intersection of Fair Lawn Avenue and Plaza Road will be confined to a single westbound lane on Fair Lawn Avenue and a single northbound lane on Plaza Road for a couple weeks while crews install a new gas main, Lt. Derek Bastinck said Thursday. Bastinck said it had become inefficient to continue making minor fixes to the 100-year-old pipe that runs underneath Fair Lawn Avenue and Plaza Road, so a complete main replacement was deemed necessary. "We get calls every once in a while from people who smell gas and it’s just a slow, tiny leak and they’re not able to efficiently fix it," he said. "They go in, they think they have it fixed and then another one pops, so they’re just going to put in all new stuff." Homes and …

Utilities face fines of $2 million or more for leaving customers in the dark

By Tom Johnson, NJ Spotlight The state’s four electric utilities would face stiffer penalties if they fail to quickly implement restoration plans in the event of severe storms, according to a recommendation introduced by the Christie administration. The governor wants the Legislature to move rapidly on the proposal, enacting it into law this fall. The proposal reflects somewhat a Democratic initiative introduced by Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula (D-Somerset), chairman of the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee this past May, although the governor’s initiative would impose larger fines. Under the proposal outlined by Gov. Chris Christie, penalties would rise from $100 per day under the current law to $25,000, with a maximum …

A shorter timeframe for power auctions and more in-state capacity could have made a bigger difference

By Tom Johnson, NJ Spotlight Most consumers may see a dip in their electric bills this June, but the drop is likely to ignite a recurring debate over whether the decline could have been much greater. For the fourth consecutive year, residential customers will see bills decrease by as much as $6.96 each month for customers of Jersey Central Power & Light to as little as $1.37 a month for those served by Rockland Electric. They can thank a steep drop in natural gas prices for the savings. But larger commercial and industrial customers, who use the bulk of electricity in New Jersey, saw the price they pay for power purchased in an annual auction run by the state increase by 7 percent. Since the auction price makes up only a small part of …

Just over 1,000 homes lost power for about four hours Monday, PSE&G confirmed.
Another day, another power outage in Fair Lawn. About 1,150 customers, concentrated in Radburn, lost power for four hours Monday night, starting just after 5 p.m., PSE&G confirmed. Power was restored in full around 9 p.m. A PSE&G rep said the power outage was caused by two separate incidents -- the failure of an underground cable and a fallen tree that damaged a power line. The outages affected at least two Radburn restaurants that were preparing dishes for Monday's Taste of our Town event at the Community Center. David Kawash, owner of the Radburn Deli, said he was in the middle of cooking the deli's famous wings when everything went dark. A batch of Buffalo and Honey Soy wings were already done, but the rest had to be left behind. …

501-2000 homes lost power just before 6 a.m. Thursday
Stormy weather was the culprit behind the power outages in Fair Lawn Thursday morning. "The wind and rain created some issues with tree branches making contact with our lines," a PSE&G rep said, via email. As many as 2000 residents lost power just before 6 a.m., according to outage information available on the PSE&G website. While most residents had their power restored by 6:30 a.m., another outage just before 9 a.m. knocked out power a second time. For some, the second outage lasted substantially longer, but it too was fixed before noon. A Radburn School employee confirmed the building lost power Thursday during the school day, but could not provide additional details on whether the outage dirsupted classes. According to a release PSE&G …

Craig Road, which had been closed for almost two weeks following the destructive late October snowstorm, has re-opened
Craig Road, which had been cordoned off with tape since the Oct. 29 snowstorm almost two weeks ago, re-opened Thursday morning, assistant borough manager Jim Van Kruiningen said. Van Kruiningen said he believed it was the last road in Fair Lawn that had still been closed following the storm, which brought down a record number of tree branches and caused widespread power outages that affected up to half of town. Craig Road remained closed for as long as it did because a telephone pole on the side of the street broke at its base and was leaning precariously out into the road, Public Works Supervisor Ron Conte said. Conte said the pole was stable enough not to cause an imminent threat to the residents living on the street, but that it needed …

PSE&G is installing a new gas line on George Street between Berdan Avenue and Bergen Avenue
The gas line installation being done on George Street between Berdan and Bergen avenues should take about six weeks to complete, an on-site PSE&G employee said Tuesday. PSE&G began work installing the line Monday, beginning at Berdan Avenue. The crew will work its way down from Berdan toward Bergen Avenue over the next few weeks. On Tuesday, crews were still working at the intersection of Berdan and George Street. George Street is currently closed to all but local traffic between Berdan Avenue and Hopper Avenue. The gas line installation is not related to damage caused by Hurricane Irene and all of the street's residents have gas service, a PSE&G employee said. The utility giant is just upgrading its facilities, which were due for a …

Updates throughout the day on the way Fair Lawn is handling the hurricane
Monday, 5 p.m. Borough departments held a Hurricane Irene-related status meeting today at 3 p.m. At the meeting, each department discussed where it's been and where it's going, along with emerging challenges and contingency plans. Borough Manager Timothy Stafford said such status meetings would be held periodically as Fair Lawn cleans up after the hurricane. One of the emerging challenges discussed was Passaic River flooding, which has returned since receding some over night. Water levels at the Passaic River gauge closest to Fair Lawn measured 13.17 feet at 4:30 p.m., more than six feet above flood level. Flood waters were rising rapidly this afternoon at Memorial Park, where county executives visited around 4:15 p.m. during a tour of …

Please reach out to 117 Shaler in Fair Lawn. This is a family without power. They have young children and I think as the week goes on, it has to be very challenging to go without power. They are a decent family who right now could benefit from support. Thank you! mwall9901@gmail. com.   more ›
