Fair Lawn Teen Hospitalized After Berdan Grove Fight

A juvenile was taken to the hospital with a head injury late Friday night after being assaulted at Berdan Grove, Fair Lawn police said.

Based on information provided by law enforcement, an earlier version of this story stated that a rock was used in the attack. Police have since determined that no rock was involved, only a fist, according to a detective who was working the case. One Fair Lawn teen was in police custody and another was in the hospital Friday night following an after hours fight at a local park, police said. A personal argument that had been brewing for a few weeks escalated into violence by the handball courts at Berdan Grove around 11 p.m. when a 15-year-old resident tackled a 14-year-old resident to the ground and punched him in the head, Sgt. Brian Metzler said. A group of about 10 teenagers witnessed the attack, which involved only the two teens, both …

Should Council Have Redistributed Grants Slated for Skate Park? [Poll]

Vote in the poll and/or sound off in the comments.

Upon learning it had the county's blessing Tuesday, borough council agreed to take $80,000 in county grants initially intended for the creation of a skate park at Walsh Pool and transfer those promised funds to the construction of a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove. The skate park, while not abandoned entirely, is firmly on hold until Fair Lawn All-Sports returns to the council with its plans for expanding the organization's footprint at the former Walsh Pool site. All-Sports' preliminary plans, which have not yet received council support, call for building a baseball and soccer field around the skate park. While several council members said they intend to honor their earlier commitment to relocate the skate park, some residents …

@Jenne - The borough had been planning to go ahead with the skate park. They had a design and a timeline for construction and they filled the pool to begin that process. Then All Sports made a presentation about their plan for the space, and not long after that, the council learned the county would honor a transfer of the grant from the skate park to the ADA playground. They were given the …   more ›

Council Reallocates Skate Park Funds to ADA Playground

Council has elected to reallocate $80,000 in county grants originally intended for the construction of a skate park at the former Walsh Pool to a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove.

Residents eagerly awaiting the return of Fair Lawn's modular skatepark will have to wait a while longer. After backing a multi-phase plan to expedite the transformation of Walsh Pool into a skate park for much of the past year, council abruptly changed course Tuesday and reallocated -- with the county's permission -- all of its skate park grant funding to the construction of a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove. "Berdan has been established as the perfect place [for the ADA playground]," said councilwoman Lisa Swain, who supported the $80,000 fund transfer. "That playground is overdue for a total makeover and we need to think about our residents with special needs, they need a place to go." The reprioritization of funds comes less …

By the way, after a recent council meeting I was told not to worry about Fair Lawn All Sports' plan to destroy the playground at Walsh park, it wouldn't happen for years and my children would be grown by then. So, by "would not renege on their commitment to the Fair Lawn fifth and sixth graders who had requested its construction" I suspect the council means it won't renege, it'll just wait until …   more ›

Litter, Graffiti at Borough Parks Troubles Residents

The borough has tried to curb the problem through various means, but has been largely unsuccessful at deterring violators.

It's not unusual on summer mornings to find empty bottles, cigarette butts and used condoms littering the grounds at any number of the Fair Lawn parks that serve as late night hangouts for area teens. Disgusted residents have brought the issue to the borough's attention on multiple occasions, borough manager Tom Metzler said. While each complaint is taken seriously and addressed, finding a permanent solution to the problem has proven elusive. The borough has tried discouraging kids from hanging at parks after hours by turning off field lights and emphasizing police and auxiliary police checks, but there isn't a whole lot that can be done to curb the problem short of having a police officer sit at the park all night long, Metzler said. …

Disgusted As a volunteer that has cleaned Berdan Grove once a month since the playground was first put in, here are some of my observations. 1. It's not kids leaving dirty diapers and diaper wipes on the ground. 2. Its not teenagers, but the adults that bring their young children to the playground that allow these youngsters to leave dixi cup spoons and 4 oz juice drinks on the playground. 3. It …   more ›
