Scout Delivers Hefty Food Drive Returns

Stephen Silberman, a soon-to-be Eagle Scout, dropped off his food drive collections to the Fair Lawn Food Pantry Wednesday afternoon.

Aspiring Eagle Scout Stephen Silberman delivered to the food pantry Wednesday the copious returns from his three-week food drive. While he had set up collection drop boxes in borough hall, the library, the community center and at his karate dojo, the majority of his donations were raised during a frigid two-day stint in late February where he and about a dozen other scouts stood with signs at the Radburn Clock Tower imploring motorists and passersby to donate. "We were there for three hours the first day, four hours the second day and it was cold and windy," Silberman said. "But we got a lot of stuff." Handy Teen Gives Food Pantry a Boost

For his Eagle project, Stephen Silberman of Boy Scout Troop 53 has spruced up the Fair Lawn Food Pantry

As a former volunteer there, Stephen Silberman was well aware of the Fair Lawn Food Pantry’s storage and supply limitations. So when it came time to begin planning his Eagle project last year, the high school junior and Boy Scout Troop 53 member was determined to find a fix for the pantry’s suboptimal shelving, insufficient storage space and general dearth of food reserves after the holidays.  His proposed solution: raise the existing shelves, build two ergonomic rolling cabinets and hold a food drive in mid-February when the pantry’s reserves start getting low. “They liked the idea from the start,” said Silberman, who immediately began preparing the specifics of the project for review by the troop committee and the Boy Scouts of America …
