Fair Lawn's burglary rate has more than doubled since 2009, prompting the borough's police department to take action.
Fair Lawn’s recent surge in burglaries has pushed the police department to take concerted action in an attempt to curb the frequency of break-ins. Starting last weekend, the department began deploying additional patrolmen overnight in recently affected areas. "As the result of the increased commercial burglaries occurring over the midnight hours, we took a proactive initiative and put some plainclothes officers and plainclothes detectives out overnight with the direct mission of just looking for nothing else but suspicious activity related to burglaries," Detective Lt. Michael Uttel said. "Most were occurring over the weekend, so that’s when we directed our manpower." Uttel said that because police have been handling more commercial than …

Police have apprehended both suspects wanted in a home burglary on Elaine Terrace last Wednesday, April 11.
Police have arrested the second suspect wanted in connection with a home burglary last week, Sgt. Richard Schultz said. Maximino Rosa, 28, of Newark, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with burglary and theft, police said. Police allege Rosa was working with Jose L. Nieves, 22, also of Newark, to break into an Elaine Terrace home last Wednesday. Nieves was arrested and charged with burglary last week, after police stopped him driving a black BMW that allegedly had been spotted pulling away from the scene of the reported burglary, police said. On April 11 around 11:30 a.m., police responded to a call from a vigilant neighbor who reported a burglary in progress at 8-03 Elaine Terrace. Police said the neighbor witnessed the passenger of…

The majority of burglaries in Fair Lawn last year occurred south and west of Route 208
Burglaries in Fair Lawn, which were at a nine-year high in 2011, were confined largely to the area west and south of the Route 208 highway that effectively splits the borough in half, a Patch analysis has found. More than three times the burglaries were committed to the southwest of Route 208 than to the northeast, with many concentrated along the southern, western and eastern borders of town. Burglaries affected both commercial-heavy drags like Broadway, River Road and Saddle River Road, and residential areas, especially those homes on the west side of town located near bridges that cross the Passaic River into Paterson. A relatively clean square of real estate in the borough's east end where few burglaries occurred last year (in relative…

Police have charged a 17-year-old youth from Elmwood Park in connection with burglaries of Krauszer's and B&B Liquors over the weekend.
Aided by store surveillance footage, police have developed enough information to charge a local teen in connection with early morning burglaries at two River Road businesses last weekend. Police charged the 17-year-old Elmwood Park youth with two burglaries, alleging he broke into both Krauszer's Food Store and B&B Wines and Liquors on successive mornings this past Saturday and Sunday. Around 5:30 a.m. on April 7, police responded to the Krauszer's on River Road for a report of a loud noise outside the store and a suspicious male seen fleeing the scene on foot. Police established a perimeter with the assistance of both the Elmwood Park and Bergen County police departments but were unable to locate the suspect, whom the store's manager …

March was one of the worst recent months on record for burglaries and larcenies in Fair Lawn
The number of burglaries in Fair Lawn, which were already at a nine-year high in 2011, have continued to rise through the first three months of 2012. The town's burglary rate, which doubled between 2009 and 2011, is up by another 50 percent through March this year, according to monthly Uniform Crime Data provided by the Fair Lawn Police Department. If burglaries continue at their current clip, Fair Lawn will experience its first year with more than 100 burglaries since 2002 -- more than triple the number of burglaries that it had just three years ago. Due to the increase in daytime burglaries, police distributed a news release in late February urging residents to take greater care to maintain the security of their homes and vehicles. Thus …

@pl - There have been more burglaries both during the day and at night. However, most of the recent home burglaries have been cleared. There are currently a number of open commercial night burglaries, so the emphasis -- for now, at least -- has been placed on addressing those.   more ›
