The Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 67 will hold down a booth at the River Road Street Fair on Sunday, where they'll distribute safety tip sheets, coloring books and candy.
This year, keeping in mind the borough's diverse population, the Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 67 has put a little polyglot twist on the customary Halloween safety sheets the group distributes at the River Road Street Fair. For the first time, the PBA's Halloween Safety Tips trifold has been translated into four languages — English, Spanish, Russian and Hebrew — so it can reach each of Fair Lawn's most prominent demographic groups. Universal Dialect in Teaneck provided the translations. In addition to the safety tips sheets, kids who stop by the PBA's booth on Sunday will receive a Halloween-themed coloring book and have the opportunity to get fingerprinted for an I.D. kit. The PBA, Fair Lawn Police Auxiliary and …

Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove asked that all council members sign up to receive to the Chamber of Commerce's email newsletter for Chamber information.
Council members cleared the air at Tuesday's work session over a miscommunication that led Democrats Lisa Swain and Kurt Peluso to not attend a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored breakfast last week that was intended as a "Meet the Mayor and Council" event. The Chamber breakfast at Rivara's was discussed initially at a council work session two months ago, but at the time, council did not set a firm date for the event. The details of the event were not discussed again publicly, but the Chamber of Commerce began advertising the "Meet the Mayor and Council" breakfast in its weekly email newsletter on Feb. 16. "I just want to go on the record as saying that I was not invited, nor was Kurt," said Swain, who said used to, but no longer receives the …

The Fair Lawn Food Pantry accepted a $2,000 check from the Chamber of Commerce at Tuesday's Chamber meeting.
In January, more than 100 patrons braved stormy weather and a power outage to attend the Chamber of Commerce's "Taste of Our Town" event, whose net proceeds were earmarked for the Fair Lawn food pantry. The Chamber officially donated those proceeds -- $2,000 worth -- to the food pantry Tuesday in the form of a check presented to Health and Human Services director Carol Wagner. "We really appreciate the Chamber's support," Wagner said, after accepting the donation. "They say the economy is starting to pick up, but last week alone we had three new people coming in." All food pantry donations go directly to a dedicated fund used only for needy Fair Lawn families. "We try to help them out with the food pantry so it frees up the money that they…

The Chamber of Commerce got a record turnout at Monday's "Taste of Our Town" event
Stormy weather and a power outage weren't enough to keep patrons or participating restaurants from coming out to Monday's "Taste of Our Town" at the Community Center. The third-annual Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce-sponsored food fest, whose net proceeds go to the town's food pantry, experienced record attendance, with as many as 120 people coming out to sample cuisine from an assortment of Fair Lawn's finest eateries. "Never in a million years did we anticipate this," Chamber president Mary Marrara said. "Turnout was unbelievable." Turnout was so high, in fact, that guests who arrived during the latter half of the evening missed out. "We ran out of food," Marrara said. "That hadn't happened before." At least two Radburn restaurants -- the …
