Week in Review: Sports Tournaments, Daly Field Developments, School Custodians Cut

Missed any of this week's news? It's all right here

Monday, May 14 The Fair Lawn High School Boys Tennis team responded with a bounce back season this year thanks to the strong play of some younger players. Democratic council members Lisa Swain and Kurt Peluso, who recently called for the resignation of both the mayor and deputy mayor due to an alleged conflict of interest, won't be taking legal action to have the allegedly conflicted council members' votes thrown out.  Natalie Lacatena will replace interim assistant superintendent Judith Moran on July 1. Head Lines Salon on Fair Lawn Avenue and The Hallmark Shop on River Road were the two latest businesses to fall victim to overnight burglaries. Tuesday, May 15 The Fair Lawn High School girls lacrosse team's state playoff loss Tuesday …

Board of Ed Approves Custodial Outsourcing

The board voted to privatize eight night custodial positions at the high school, resulting in the loss of jobs for six district custodians.

The board of education would not be persuaded Thursday by a second round of public pleas to retain the entirety of its in-house custodial force. Board members sat and listened for over an hour as students, teachers and residents implored them not to privatize eight custodial positions, but when the resolution came up for a vote, they displayed none of the tortured hesitation apparent at last month's meeting. Seven of the nine board members voted to terminate eight night custodian positions at the high school -- resulting in six layoffs -- and to expand the scope of its relationship with Aramark Management Services to take their places. Ron Barbarulo and Mary Wallace cast the dissenting votes. Other than an impromptu speech in defense of …

Missed any of this week's Fair Lawn news? It's all right here.

Monday, May 7 The president and former president of Fair Lawn All-Sports presented council with an alternative to the organization's arduous coaching certification process. Neighbors report that dozens of young adults frequent the park at night and leave it a mess. ADA Committee served as go between for All-Sports and the Saddle Brook Soccer Association to get league off the ground. Democratic council members Lisa Swain and Kurt Peluso preferred taking the case back to court and arguing that former police Sgt. Michael Messina was not a whistleblower. Tuesday, May 8 The teen reported feeling pain in her entire body, but police said her injuries were not life threatening. Fair Lawn police had a warrant out on one of the men arrested Monday …

School Board Constructs Plan to Save 5 Custodians

The Board of Education will vote on a revised "cuts" plan at its May 17 meeting.

The Board of Education will vote next Thursday on a revised cuts plan that aims to fill a $450,000 hole in the school district's budget that was introduced last month when the board voted to retain 13 in-house custodians who were set to be replaced by contractors. The new plan would save the jobs of some, but not all of the custodians who had originally been on the district's chopping block. Superintendent Bruce Watson said all eight night custodian positions at the high school would still be privatized if the new proposal were to pass. The move would result in six layoffs, since one of those positions is already vacant and another is a retirement that wouldn't be filled. To recoup the money spent to retain the five other custodial …

Would You Fear for Your Child's Safety if School Custodians are Outsourced? [Poll]

Vote in the poll or tell us in the comments

In response to public concerns aired at last Thursday's meeting, the board of education voted to retain 13 members of the district's in-house custodial staff who had been slated for layoffs and put the expansion of the district's custodial outsourcing efforts on hold. The primary issues raised by the dozens of students, teachers and residents who packed the Edison School gymnasium to protest the planned layoffs were the perceived effects on safety and cleanliness that outsourcing custodians would have on the schools. "Me and my peers are at school day and night for prom set up, for different meetings, we’re always there – 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, sometimes even 11 o’clock," high school student Lauren Rosenfeld said, speaking on behalf of the…

One last thing (sorry, but I am very passionate about school/student safety). Parents.... if you're School Board decides that it is a good idea to outsource why not ask them this question.... Ask them if they would mind if you brought several of the previous outsourced custodians into the buildings 1 year after outsourcing (to assist you in doing an inspection). If the school board actually …   more ›

Board of Ed Retains In-House Custodians at a Cost

The Board of Education must now come up with $450,000 in cuts to replace the money that outsourcing custodial workers would have brought in to the district.

An outpouring of public support for the district’s custodians at Thursday’s board of education meeting likely spared them their jobs – at least for the time being. Following more than an hour of pleas from two dozen students, teachers and residents, the board voted to freeze expansion of the custodial outsourcing that began last year and to retain the 13 in-house custodians whose jobs were on the chopping block. While the board’s decision was met with a standing ovation Thursday night, it may end up having repercussions that are far from popular. The district’s already approved $86 million budget depends on the $450,000 infusion that custodial outsourcing would have provided. With that no longer forthcoming, the nearly half-million dollar …

@Damocles interesting choice for a screen name, welcome (back) to the patch :) As an American CEO, I compete to keep my employees, they are free to leave at anytime. I need to ensure that I compensate them well, or they will work for someone else. Conversely they work hard and stay current for our company. If they are over paid, there is no return for the investors. The private sector has built …   more ›
