Green Team Introduces 'One Pound at a Time' Initiative

The Fair Lawn Green Team, in partnership with Borough Manager Tom Metzler, will be launching a series of events and initiatives to encourage healthier and more environmentally sustainable lifestyles among borough residents.

Fair Lawn residents who resolved to drop a few pounds in 2012 can soon rally around the efforts of Borough Manager Tom Metzler, who will become the poster boy for the Green Team’s new One Pound at a Time initiative. While the team coordinates an effort to encourage residents to lose weight this year, the manager will take up the task himself, in a weight loss challenge to drop one pound at a time for charity. The Green Team introduced three components of its initiative earlier this year: reduce weight, reduce waste, and inflate tires. “These are three components that we feel will make Fair Lawn a more sustainable community,” said Councilwoman Lisa Swain, who proposed the initiative. The first two components, weight loss and waste reduction…

Borough Honors Residents, Schools for Going Green

The Fair Lawn Green Team announced its first-ever Going Green Awards at Tuesday's council meeting

The Fair Lawn Green Team announced Tuesday the inaugural winners of the Fair Lawn Going Green Awards. The awards program, modeled after the Property Maintenance Committee's House Beautiful Award, recognizes local businesses, schools and residents for committing to sustainable, environmentally friendly initiatives. This year's individual winners were Michael and Pat LaRocco, who have done tremendous work to "green" their home. The LaRoccos have placed a hydronic baseboard heater in their basement, installed rain barrels to collect water runoff from their roof, installed compost bins in their backyard and even added a toilet tank handwashing basin in their bathroom to save on potable water. Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Warren Point …

Fair Lawn Recognized For Environmental Sustainability Efforts

This month the borough received its long-awaited bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey, the state's comprehensive sustainability program for municipalities.

After nearly three years spent establishing green initiatives throughout the community, the borough finally achieved official recognition this month for its ongoing environmental efforts. Fair Lawn learned March 8 that it had been awarded bronze certification by Sustainable Jersey, a statewide program that recognizes municipalities dedicated to going green, saving money and making progress toward sustainable living for years to come. Fair Lawn is one of 17 Sustainable Jersey-certified municipalities in Bergen County, “This is very exciting,” said councilwoman Lisa Swain, who spearheaded Fair Lawn’s sustainability efforts a few years back and formed the borough’s Green Team. “Educating the public about a sustainable future has been our goal…

Fair Lawn Environmental Groups Talk Stormwater Management

A plan presented to a joint meeting of the Fair Lawn Environmental Commission and Fair Lawn Green Team calls for a levy on impervious surface

Fair Lawn's Environmental Commission and Green Team are in the early stages of coordinating an effort to mitigate Fair Lawn's flooding problem. At a joint meeting Wednesday, the groups convened to discuss a stormwater management plan developed by Monica Moscovici, a master gardener who sits on both borough committees and oversaw the installation of a rain garden at Radburn School earlier this year. Ellis Marples, a former Pompton Lakes councilman who implemented an effective stormwater management plan in that community, attended the meeting as a guest speaker and offered tips on initiating such a program. As presented, Moscovici's plan would levy an annual fee on residents based on their property's amount of impervious surface (i.e. …

I didn't think it would go over that well. Let's put it this way. How many acres of rooftops, sidewalks, driveways, streets, highways, parking lots were there in 1900 compared with the year 2000 or today? Many public officials have this fear of using the words 'over-development' that happened between those years I mention but instead say 'impervious surfaces' but both mean the same thing.   more ›
