Hillsborough's Late Surge Ends Cutters' Season

Feb. 26 vs. Hillsborough (Round 1 of State Playoffs) Fair Lawn senior Thomas Calderone tied the game with a clutch goal early in the third period -- his second in as many playoff games -- but Hillsborough answered less than two minutes later to retake the lead. The Raiders tacked on another two more scores before the final horn sounded to capture a 4-1 win and end the Cutters' season. Goaltender Ken Martorelli made 26 saves in net. Feb. 19 vs. Ridgewood (Semifinals of Big North Gold League Playoffs) Down 2-0, Cutters Thomas Calderone's early third period goal put Fair Lawn back within one, but Ridgewood answered with a quick goal of its own to recapture the momentum. Cutters' Real Test Will Come Against Ridgewood

The Fair Lawn High School Ice Hockey team is 8-3-1 and has already clinched a spot in the Bergen County Tournament.

On paper, the Fair Lawn High School Ice Hockey team looks much improved. They're scoring more goals per game and surrendering fewer. They're third in the division and have nearly equaled their divisional win total from a year ago. They even already punched their ticket to the Bergen County Tournament after failing to receive an invite last season. But it won't be clear just how much this year's team has improved until they face off with Ridgewood this Saturday. Despite their hot start, the Cutters have yet to beat an opponent with a winning record. Paramus Catholic, who dropped Fair Lawn 4-2 in the second game of the year, is the only winning team they've even faced.
