The simple, but virtuous act of one kind stranger who returned a Fair Lawn man's lost wallet this week set in motion a course of events that will benefit the entire community. A Radburn resident wrote sizable checks to both the Fair Lawn food pantry and the Fair Lawn public library Wednesday after his lost wallet, which contained about $180, was returned intact. The good Samaritan who returned the wallet refused a monetary award. "I decided that the donations to the food pantry and the library were the way I'd honor the civic virtue of this gentleman," said the relieved Radburn resident (we'll call him JB), who wished to keep his name and the amount of his donations anonymous. JB had just paid for a few purchases at the Radburn CVS and was…

A look at Sunday's opening reception for the new art exhibit at the Fair Lawn Library's Pine Gallery.
Originating at the Blackwell St. Center for the Arts founded in Dover, NJ, in 1983, the Blackwell St. Artists have since expanded into a non-proft group with a mission to "revitalize fine arts in NJ." Beyond their original gallery, the group has staged exhibits at various New York City locations and came to the Fair Lawn Library on Sunday. The free exhibit will run until February 28. The show, called "Opaline," features varied styles and mediums, from watercolor to photography. It premiered at a reception with the artists, who are interviewed in this edition of Inside Fair Lawn.

Drawings by 8-year-old Elana Kavesh will be featured in the front display case at the Fair Lawn public library this month. Kavesh, a Fair Lawn second grader with a natural love of drawing, began taking art lessons at age 7. While her parents describe their budding artist as "a bit shy," Elana's artwork would be best described as bold, with a preference for vivid purples and yellows. She enjoys drawing animals and works in a variety of mediums, including colored pencil, paints and crayon. When she's not drawing, Elana enjoys dancing and playing soccer. -- Follow Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Patch on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to receive our daily newsletter in your inbox each morning

Come out to the Fair Lawn library next Monday at 7 p.m. for a screening of cult classic "Troll 2," considered by some, the greatest bad movie ever. For a taste of the "Troll 2" plot and movie background, from Wikipedia: "The plot concerns a family pursued by vegetarian goblins who seek to transform them into plants so that they can eat them. The English-language script was written by [Claudio] Fragasso and his wife Rosella Drudi, neither of whom actually spoke any English at the time. Despite filming the movie in Utah, and casting the movie entirely with American actors (many of whom had no prior acting experience and had responded to the casting call hoping to be extras), Fragasso also employed an exclusively Italian crew, who likewise …

Wayne Robbins speaks to British artist and interior designer Sydney Roberts, whose fine art printmaking is on display at Fair Lawn Library's Pine Gallery through Oct. 31.
Photographs by fine artist and professional interior designer Sydney Roberts are on display at the Fair Lawn Library's Pine Gallery this September. An exhibit featuring Roberts' prints, created in the giclee printmaking style that employs high-resolution inkjet printers, opened on Sept. 16 and will run through Oct. 31. Roberts, who was born in Yorkshire, England, and now lives in Franklin Lakes, had his signature work, “The Great Falls,” in Paterson, presented to Barack Obama following the president's visit to Paterson last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Roberts' work, rooted in his romantic vision of the Impressionist school of art, employs both photo-realism and photo-impressionism styles. He lists 19th century British …

Library staff will be furloughed on all five fridays in August and the building will be closed to the public.
Unless you've got pressing police business or a meal waiting at the Fair Lawn Athletic Club, a Friday trip down the 14-00 block of Parmelee Avenue won't likely pay off this month. In addition to the shuttered municipal building, which has been closed on Fridays since June 28, budget cuts have also forced the library to eliminate its Friday hours in August. The move comes as no surprise to library staff, who have been aware that they would be furloughed on all five Fridays in August since budget discussions began in early spring. "It's a down time for us and we thought it would minimize the inconvenience for the public," library director Tim Murphy explained at a March budget meeting. "Everyone is going to pull together in an attempt to …
