The Fair Lawn Canoe Regatta, postponed in June due to a lack of participants, will not be rescheduled this year. The borough had previously hoped to hold the race in September, to coincide with a bike rodeo for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, but assistant borough manager Jim Van Kruiningen said spring 2013 is now the target. Van Kruiningen did not know how the additional postponment would affect the status of the bike rodeo, which was proposed earlier this year by three enterprising Milnes middle schoolers. Van Kruiningen said this year's 1.8-mile canoe race, which starts on the Passaic River at Memorial Park and finishes at the Elmwood Park Marina, was a no-go without help from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. In past years…

Seventh and eighth graders at Memorial Middle School spent Friday afternoon contributing to the ecological health of their school environment
In what teachers hope becomes an annual event, seventh and eighth grade students at Memorial Middle School took part in an all-encompassing environmental citizenship initiative Friday afternoon on school grounds. The event was tied in with this year’s bi-annual river cleanup visit from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, which nine years ago partnered with Memorial to construct the school’s river walk and helps maintain it to this day. For the past eight years, PVSC has worked with the school to conduct a Passaic River cleanup event on two Saturdays each year. “This is one of the stronger partnerships that PVSC has, and it gets stronger every year,” said PVSC public affairs director Tom Pietrykoski, noting that the Memorial cleanup is …

The borough started a dumpster sweep Wednesday, aimed at quickening cleanup for the hardest hit parts of town
To accelerate cleanup, Fair Lawn public works personnel will be traveling to parts of town hardest hit by flooding and using heavy machinery to load curbside trash into dumpsters for residents, borough manager Timothy Stafford said Wednesday. Since last Monday, the borough had already been sending an extra garbage truck through town each day. Some areas, however, need more than an additional truck. "In the 2nd Street area, an extra truck is not going to do it because of the extent of the damange and the extent of the materials put out," Stafford said. "We've arranged with the contractor to bring dumpsters now that the material is out, and we will put the material into the dumpsters." Stafford said the borough had arranged with its waste …

The Passaic River flash flooded last night and will continue rising into Friday, with water again expected to reach into resident's homes
As persistent rain continues to pelt Fair Lawn, water levels are rising and flooding is again expected to affect residents living on the Passaic River Basin. Water levels at Little Falls had reached 7.62 feet by 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and are expected to continue rising over the next couple days, cresting at 10.5 feet on Friday afternoon. Emergency management chief Ira Marks said residents living in the flood plain were notified by phone Tuesday night that water would again reach their homes. He said he's been receiving dozens of calls from concerned residents. Already, a rare Passaic River flash flood closed Wagaraw Road Tuesday night. Water levels receded over night, and the road re-opened this morning. A flood warning for all of Bergen …
