Fair Lawn has hosted dances for adults with special needs for more than two years.
Fair Lawn's ADA Committee is set to be honored by the Arc of Bergen and Passaic Counties Thursday. Arc, a nonprofit which helps people with developmental disabilities, is presenting the committee with the Steve and Ana Chepurko Award for Recreation in recognition of their successful monthly dance program. "It's an honor," ADA Committee Co-Chair Steve Weinstein said. "We're humbled by it." Weinstein joined the committee in 2010 when he was a member of the Fair Lawn Council. They hoped to "revitalize" the committee, and found that there were no recreational programs for developmentally disabled people in town, he said. Arc had just lost the space they had been using for dances, so it made sense to host it in the Fair Lawn Community Center, …
Jillian Morgese's first major role is in Joss Whedon's adaption of the Shakespeare play.
Jillian Morgese, a 23-year-old actress from Fair Lawn, has landed her first starring role in a movie in Joss Whedon's modern adaption of the Shakespeare play "Much Ado About Nothing." She plays Hero, a young woman in love who also helps set up her wisecracking cousin Beatrice with a like-minded man. Morgese, a former gymnast and 2007 graduate of Fair Lawn High School, told The Record "the whole experience was a dream." According to IMDB, her only previous movie role was in another Whedon film, "The Avengers," in which she had a minor part. The Record reported Morgese got the opportunity to audition for "Much Ado" when Whedon personally invited her, noting her resemblance to actress Amy Acker, who plays her cousin in the film. The movie has…

Runners will have to go someplace else while Fair Lawn High School's football field gets a makeover this summer.
The Fair Lawn Board of Education recently approved a pair of contracts for improvements to the high school's football field. The board awarded contracts for $360,000 to Field Turf for artificial turf and $248,000 to Dakota Excavating for other work associated with the project. The work is expected to start as soon as June 28 and last through September 16. During that time, the school's field and track will be closed. The new field's artificial turf will make it available to more students because it can handle more use than natural grass, school officials previously told Patch. “If you look at Bergen County, a majority of the high schools already have synthetic turf,” Superintendent Bruce Watson previously said. “And the reason why is that …
A cold spell in May delayed the opening of the weekly market from its original planned opening this week.
The Fair Lawn Farmer's Market will open for the season July 3. The weekly market, now in its fifth year, takes place on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the New Song Church parking lot. This year, the market will include anchor Silver Lake Farm, local shop Nuts For You, popular Paterson picklers Dr. Pickle and traditional Mediterranean foods from Nana's Home Kitchen, according to Jane Spindel, who coordinates the market for the Fair Lawn Garden Committee. The market was originally slated to open this week, but a cold spell in late May caused a delay for the farmer, according to Spindel. It will likely run through mid October, depending on the weather. Tommy Burns, a Fair Lawn native and graduate of Don Bosco Prep, signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on Monday after the club selected him in the 22nd round of the 2013 draft on June 8.
Tommy Burns was deep in the midst of a state title run last year when the Milwaukee Brewers came calling in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft. Then the senior ace on New Jersey's top-ranked high school team, Burns was fresh off pitching a perfect inning to close out Don Bosco's state semifinal win over Delbarton when he learned he'd been drafted. He chose not to sign; opting instead to play a year at JuCo powerhouse Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, to improve his draft stock and re-enter the draft this year. When the draft finally rolled around on June 6, nearly a month after the finish of his first collegiate season at Howard, Burns didn't have anything to distract him as the teams picked. The Fair Lawn native went …

Here's a look at the past week in Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook.
Cops are going to become a common sight in Fair Lawn schools this fall. Fair Lawn Police will begin making regular visits to schools during their patrols in order to beef up school security, better prepare themselves in the event of an emergency and make students more at ease in officers' presence, Interim Police Chief Glen Cauwels said. The Fair Lawn Council also voted in favor of re-implementing the D.A.R.E. program for 6th-graders in three of the district’s schools during their meeting Tuesday night. Powerlifting Fair Lawn resident Naomi Kutin, called "the world's strongest girl" and "Supergirl," recently set the world record for the 97-pound woman's raw squat by lifting 225 pounds. An Oakland man released from prison in March for burglary was picked up in Fair Lawn Friday on trespassing charges, police said.
A convicted burglar who had been charged in a home break-in on Kenneth Avenue in 2011, was picked up by police Friday for trespassing on the same street where a home was burglarized the day before, police said. Although the man, identified as 24-year-old Robert Lindsay, of Oakland, has not been charged in Thursday's break-in on Northern Drive, he has been charged with trespassing and providing false information to police. A resident spotted Lindsay walking through yards, dodging people and hiding in bushes on Northern Drive Friday morning and called police, Sgt. Lonnie Mergler said. When officers found Lindsay near Broadway and Virginia Drive, Mergler said he provided a false name, but was not carrying any burglary tools. "We do not know …
