The volunteer group has won the award two years in a row.

The squad has won the award, which is the highest given at the event, two years in a row. It is given to those who have participated in the saftey and health program for five or more years without work-related injuries or illnesses causing lost time. Inside Fair Lawn: Fair Lawn High School Marathon 2013

Videographer Wayne Robbins stopped by the high school on Saturday to capture some of this year's Marathon festivities.

Wayne Robbins, a 1968 Fair Lawn High School Marathon participant, went back to school on Saturday to capture some of the highlights from this year's event, where members of the high school senior class plan an action-packed two days full of continuous games, music and entertainment with the goal of raising money for local organizations. Wayne filmed field games, kickball, volleyball, Jell-O Wars, a splash down at the dunk tank and a whole lot more. He also interviewed some of the people -- teachers, students and parents --who helped make this year's Marathon possible. Proceeds from this year's event will be distributed to the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and the Fair Lawn ADA Committee for the creation of a barrier-free playground at Berdan …

Fair Lawn Amassed Area's Largest Toys for Tots Collection

The Fair Lawn police, rescue squad and police dispatchers teamed up with the U.S. Marine Corps this holiday season to collect Toys for Tots.

Fair Lawn emergency service workers set quite the bar for toy collections this past holiday season. In their first year participating in the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program, the Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association, in concert with the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and Fair Lawn Police Dispatchers collected more toys than any of the other 42 collection stations throughout the area, PBA president Michael O'Brien said. O'Brien said he had no idea they had collected 3,041 toys until recently when the PBA received a tally of the items they collected and a plaque from the Saddle River Detachment No. 1211 Marine Corps League recognizing them for their contributions. "I was truly inspired by my brothers and sister as we worked as a team…

Woman, Dog Extricated From Car After Rollover

A 74-year-old Fair Lawn woman and her dog had to be extricated from her vehicle Monday morning after the car toppled a utility pole on Fair Lawn Avenue and flipped over, police said.

A woman who lost control of her car on Fair Lawn Avenue Monday morning and struck a utility pole had to be extricated from her vehicle by emergency service volunteers, police said. Fair Lawn resident Frances Fleischer, 74, was driving her 2007 Nissan Altima westbound on Fair Lawn Avenue near Hedman Place around 11:30 a.m. when she swerved into a public service utility pole, Sgt. Richard Schultz said. He said the front right side of the vehicle impacted the pole, which caused the car to rotate and flip over on its right side, trapping the driver and her small lap dog inside. The rollover threw both the woman and her dog — neither of whom were restrained  — to the passenger side of the vehicle, Schultz said. He said rescue squad workers used…

Borough Weighs Future of Old Rescue Squad Site

What would you like to see done with the site of the old Rescue Squad building on Heights Avenue? Vote in the poll.

After tossing around a variety of ideas for how to redevelop a plot of land on Heights Avenue where the Rescue Squad building once stood, the Fair Lawn council decided Tuesday it would seek public input from nearby residents before deciding how to proceed. At Tuesday's council work session, Metzler and the council discussed four options for the empty Heights lot, which is located at the corner of Heights and Loretto avenues: 1) convert it into a pocket park; 2) convert it into a community garden; 3) convert it into a permit parking lot; or 4) auction it off to the highest bidder. Council previously attempted the auction option at a public meeting last spring to no avail. The property, for which the borough sought a $150,000 minimum price …

Santa Boone Surprises Food Pantry Volunteer for Christmas [VIDEO]

The Operation Santa Boone team was back at it this year, orchestrating a surprise Christmas visit for a dedicated food pantry client/volunteer.

When Liz Twiggs learned last year that one her Fair Lawn Food Pantry clients couldn't afford a Christmas tree, she sprung into action and -- with the help of Fair Lawn police detective and Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church pastor David Boone -- launched, "Operation Santa Boone." Twiggs, Boone and a couple kindly elves delivered a pre-lit tree and cartloads of other gifts for her client and client's family during a surprise night time run that was aided by members of the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad. This year, the Operation Santa Boone crew was back at it, providing a food pantry client/volunteer and her family with gifts for the holiday. Twiggs' plan this time around pulled in Boone, food pantry volunteer Beri Raffiani, three elves -- …

Toys for Tots Collection Bound for Victims of Superstorm Sandy, Sandy Hook Elementary

The Fair Lawn police, rescue squad and police dispatchers teamed up with the U.S. Marine Corps this holiday season to collect Toys for Tots.

Fair Lawn police officers, dispatchers and rescue squad volunteers Tuesday loaded the heaps of toys they've amassed this holiday season into a van headed for the Closter Fire Department, which serves as Bergen County's Toys for Tots distribution center. The toys, collected through resident donations, will support a wide range of worthy groups and causes including local children's hospitals, homeless shelters, religious institutions and the children of deployed military service members. Trucks carrying toys will also make stops in Toms River for distribution to Hurricane Sandy victims, and in Newtown, Conn., for those affected by Friday's devastating school shooting. James Teehan, a Paramus police detective who made toy collection runs …

The Fair Lawn Police Department, dispatchers and rescue squad will once again team up with the United States Marine Corps Reserve this holiday season to collect toys for children of all ages as part of the Toys for Tots initiative. "During these tough economic times, there are going to be even more children without holiday gifts," Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association president Michael O'Brien said in a statement. "PBA Local 67, along with our emergency personnel partners, are fully committed to Toys for Tots, and with the public's support we will make the holidays even brighter for as many children as we can." Fair Lawn's Emergency Service Volunteers Respond to Devastated Communities

Fair Lawn has sent crews to offer assistance in Toms River, Moonachie and Little Ferry since Monday's Superstorm.

Fair Lawn's emergency service volunteers, many living without power and heat at their own homes, have worked around the clock since Sandy swept through the area Monday.  In addition to the well over 100 calls that Fair Lawn's fire department, rescue squad and ambulance corps have answered in town this week, some members have also deployed to towns that suffered far greater devastation than Fair Lawn. This week, the fire department has sent engines to fight structure fires in the neighboring communities of Saddle Brook and Paterson, watched over Glen Rock while its volunteers attended the funeral of a long-time member and sent task forces to Ocean County and Route 46 in Teterboro for fire calls and evacuations in Toms River, Little Ferry, …
