The Fair Lawn Sunrise Rotary will honor volunteer fireman Jack Hoitsma, special education teacher Doreen Yates and Columbia Bank for their service to the borough at an awards ceremony on Friday.
The Fair Lawn Sunrise Rotary has selected two individuals and one institution to be the inaugural recipients of an award that honors local citizens who have gone above and beyond in their service to the Fair Lawn community. Jack Hoitsma, Doreen Yates and Columbia Bank will all receive the Rotary's new "Service above Self" award Friday at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Maple Avenue. Hoitsma, a 54-year member of the Fair Lawn Volunteer Fire Department, is its longest running fire chief and the father of ex-chief Chris Hoitsma. Yates, a Fair Lawn special education teacher, developed the district's acclaimed Bridges program for students with cognitive disabilities currently in place at Memorial Middle School and Fair Lawn High School. …

Fair Lawn Rotary is sponsoring a benefit Sunday at the Fair Lawn Knights of Columbus for resident Patrick McGowan, who recently received a lung transplant.
The Fair Lawn Rotary will hold a benefit for resident Patrick McGowan, who received a lung transplant this past November that saved his life. McGowan, who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2008, is making a solid recovery but faces extraordinary post-surgery expenses that include follow-up care and a daily regimen of over 30 anti-rejection medications that are not covered by insurance. As a result, members of McGowan's family and the community are getting together behind him to help any way they can. Over 400 runners participated in Fair Lawn's 11th annual First Day 5K race on Jan. 1
A 2012 Fair Lawn High School graduate and a former mayor opened 2013 as the fastest man and woman in Fair Lawn. Adam Ross, 18, finished first among Fair Lawn men, and Lisa Swain, 54, finished first among Fair Lawn women in the borough's 11th Annual First Day 5K race Tuesday. A record 405 runners participated in this year's race, which is sponsored annually by the Sunrise Rotary. Ross, a Rowan University freshman who was one of the top long distance runners in Bergen County last year while starring on Fair Lawn High School's cross country team, finished sixth overall Tuesday with a time of 17 minutes and 15 seconds. The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn donated an abundance of food and personal hygiene items to the Fair Lawn Food pantry last week, amid what has been the pantry's busiest year on record. Rotary members, who reached out to the food pantry staff in advance to determine what items were most in demand, dropped off an assortment of canned fruits, meats, vegetables, cereals, soups, pasta meals and hygiene products by the cartload last Wednesday. The food pantry, which uses private donations to assist needy borough residents by providing food, grocery store gifts and assistance paying past due utility bills, had already distributed 514 bags of food to 66 families in need as of July 31, director Liz Twiggs said. The Fair Lawn Rotary Club, police department and area ice cream shops are teaming up to launch a program that encourages children to wear a helmet while riding their bike, skateboard or scooter. The "Hooray for Helmets," initiative rewards children whom police "catch" wearing an approved helmet by awarding them with a gift certificate redeemable for a free ice cream at five area businesses. Carvel, Haagen Dazs, Ice Cream Factoria, Yogurt Plus and the Glen Rock Baskin Robbins will all begin redeeming "Hooray for Helmets" gift certificates once school lets out for summer. Got an old, but serviceable bike that you no longer need or use? Donate it to the Rotary Club of Fair Lawn’s Peneno Pedals for Progress Used Bicycle Collection on Sunday. From noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, Fair Lawn's Rotarians will collect used serviceable bikes at Edison School on behalf of Pedals for Progress. Pedals for Progress is a non-profit organization that collects used bicycles and distributes them to people in need across the globe, from Latin America to Asia. Once shipped overseas, the bikes are sold cheaply to poor working adults to give them a reliable means of transportation. The 1st Day 5K is a race held annually on Jan. 1 and sponsored by the Fair Lawn Sunrise Rotary Club
The Fair Lawn Sunrise Rotary Club will once again kick off the new year by holding its 10th Annual 1st Day 5K Run and 3K Family Walk. The run/walk, which covers a mix of slight inclines through the streets of Fair Lawn, begins at 11 a.m. at Memorial Middle School on Jan. 1. The first 300 participants receive goodie bags and t-shirts, and prizes are awarded for both male and female participants by age category.
