Fair Lawn's emergency service volunteers went above and beyond in their response to Superstorm Sandy (You can read an article about it, here). As a result, Fair Lawn Fire Chief Eric Reamy penned a memo commending his membership on their service: The storm that hit our area beginning on October 29 was unprecedented in size and severity. In the days after the first wire came down, the Fair Lawn Fire Department responded to over 100 emergency calls for service as well as countless non-emergency public assist calls and carbon monoxide alarms. We responded on mutual aid to several surrounding towns, and were a part of the first Bergen County Task Force to provide assistance to central New Jersey, specifically the Toms River Fire Department, …

Fair Lawn public school students will now be required to attend class during their scheduled winter recess week on Friday, Feb. 22, to make up for time lost because of Superstorm Sandy.
Fair Lawn public school students, who lost seven class days due to power outages following Superstorm Sandy, will have their weeklong winter recess shortened as a result. The district sent a letter home to parents last week informing them of the school calendar switch, which requires students to make up class on what had been the final day of winter recess, Friday, Feb. 22. "Since we had built in three emergency closing days into the 2012-2013 school calendar, and have to date used four of these closings, I have requested that the board of education allow me to immediately communicate the necessary changes to our school calendar so families can plan accordingly," Superintendent Bruce Watson's letter to parents reads. If circumstances force…

Daniel Mazover missed out on Irene last August and took only pictures during Snowtober a couple months later, so when he got word of Superstorm Sandy's North Jersey course a few weeks ago he wasn't about to let a little rain and some hurricane force winds keep him from filming his first weather documentary. The 13-year-old weather buff shot pre-storm interviews Sunday, filmed throughout the storm Monday afternoon -- even as he lost power in his own home -- and then circled back through Fair Lawn to capture the aftermath on Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition to filming scenes on the ground and in the car with the help of friends Jacob Chernavsky and Josh Zimmerman, Mazover even attached a Midland XTC Action Camera to the handlebars of his …

Power restoration efforts will continue in both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook all week, according to PSEG's latest estimates.
PSEG's estimates for when power will be fully restored in Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook extend further with each passing day. In the utility's latest estimates, released Monday morning, crews will continue working on both communities into the weekend. By Sunday, Nov. 11, all but 18 customers in Fair Lawn and 155 in Saddle Brook should be restored. Per PSEG's posted work schedule, crews should work extensively over the next three days in Fair Lawn -- where 38.3 percent of customers are still without power -- restoring all but about 70 unfortunate customers by midnight Wednesday. The vast majority of Saddle Brook customers—85.8 percent—have power, but PSEG will continue restoring power to those still in the dark throughout the week, at a pace …

Fair Lawn has sent crews to offer assistance in Toms River, Moonachie and Little Ferry since Monday's Superstorm.
Fair Lawn's emergency service volunteers, many living without power and heat at their own homes, have worked around the clock since Sandy swept through the area Monday. In addition to the well over 100 calls that Fair Lawn's fire department, rescue squad and ambulance corps have answered in town this week, some members have also deployed to towns that suffered far greater devastation than Fair Lawn. This week, the fire department has sent engines to fight structure fires in the neighboring communities of Saddle Brook and Paterson, watched over Glen Rock while its volunteers attended the funeral of a long-time member and sent task forces to Ocean County and Route 46 in Teterboro for fire calls and evacuations in Toms River, Little Ferry, …

Three of Fair Lawn's normal polling stations have been disrupted by power outages and will be relocated for Tuesday's election.
Voters from Fair Lawn's 4th, 5th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 20th districts will vote at alternate locations on Election Day Tuesday due to power outages at three of the borough's normal polling places. Residents who normally vote at Edison School (Districts 4 and 5) or Radburn School (Districts 13 and 14) will instead vote at the Fair Lawn Community Center, located at 10-10 20th Street, while those who normally vote at Fair Lawn Public Library (Districts 15 and 20) will vote across the street at the Municipal Building, in council chambers on the second floor. All other polling locations remain the same. If you'd rather vote early, the Bergen County Clerk's Office will remain open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through the weekend and on Monday, …
Fair Lawn public schools will be closed Monday, Nov. 5 and Tuesday, Nov. 6, but will re-open Wednesday for the remainder of the week.
Fair Lawn public schools will re-open on Wednesday, Nov. 7, and hold classes for the remainder of the week, Board of Education president Michael Rosenberg said. District schools, which had been set to close Thursday and Friday next week while teachers attended the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City, are now going to be open due to the convention's cancellation. Radburn School and Edison School, both currently still in the dark, will not re-open Wednesday unless they have regained power, Rosenberg said. Although schools will be closed Monday, the borough has scheduled a Trunk-or-Treat event that evening at Memorial and Thomas Jefferson middle schools, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cars should arrive between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Fair…
An evolving list of business, services and public buildings open in both towns.
Four days after Superstorm Sandy put large portions of Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook in the dark, many residents and businesses are still without power. There are, however, some areas with power -- either because they never lost it or it has been restored. Help us create a list of the establishments in town that do have power and are open for business by adding a comment to this article and we'll toss it into the list. *With the exception of filling stations, which are opening and closing as shipments arrive and are spent, the assumption is that these business will remain open for the duration. Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf Station, across from the Land and Sea Diner, has been fueling customers from all over the area since Wednesday evening
Frenzied fuel seekers have trekked from across the tri-state area for the past 24 hours area to fill up on the petrol manna being pumped around the clock at the Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf Station. Owner Bob Abraham, whose line of customers stretches more than a mile down Pollitt Drive to Route 208 North (where it’s backing up traffic), said he’s serviced gas guzzlers from Pennsylvania to upstate New York and everywhere in between. Abraham owes his pumping prominence to Morlot Avenue resident and fuel savior Israel Sabo, who offered the station – which had been without power since Monday morning -- use of his two generators. Sabo, who gets his car serviced by Abraham at the Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf station, stopped by around 6 p.m. Wednesday to …
Picnic the Restaurant, located in the Radburn Plaza building, has been serving up affordable comfort food and letting customers recharge phones and computers this week.
In Radburn these days, great [electrical] power comes with great responsibility. Or so Picnic the Restaurant chef Christine Nunn believes. As a service to the community, the award-winning Radburn eatery has shuffled its menu this week to accommodate storm-wearied residents sick of shivering at home in darkness. Instead of her usual fare, Nunn is serving up a rotating assortment of comfort foods at lower-than-normal Picnic prices. Soups, salads and starters like "mummy wrapped bangers" and "cream of toadstool [mushroom] soup" went for between $7 and $8 Wednesday, while entrees like the "Headless Horseman" -- pumpkin ravioli with sage brown butter sauce -- and meatloaf with mashed potatoes and root veggies ranged from $15 to $17. "Not our …
