Tree Planting Ceremony for Flossie Dobrow Saturday

Florence "Flossie" Dobrow, who died in 2011, was the longest-serving council member in borough history and Fair Lawn's first female mayor.

A tree planting ceremony will be held Saturday in front of Fair Lawn Borough Hall to memorialize former Councilwoman Florence "Flossie" Dobrow. Dobrow, who died at age 93 in 2011, was the longest tenured council member in Fair Lawn history, its first female mayor and an inductee in the New Jersey State League of Municipalities’ Elected Officials Hall of Fame. While in office from 1975 to 2001, Dobrow spearheaded construction of the Fair Lawn Senior Center, founded the Fair Lawn Garden Club and helped secure funding for the Dobrow Sports Complex off of Harristown Road that is named for her, according to her obituary.  In addition to serving on council for 27 years, Dobrow was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Temple Avoda and the…

Local Non-Profits Attract Greater Financial Scrutiny

Council is requesting that all local non-profits provide financial statements as a prerequisite of consideration for borough funding.

Non-profits that receive borough funding will be subject to greater financial scrutiny next year. At the request of Deputy Mayor Ed Trawinski, council has agreed that beginning next year the disbursement of borough money to non-profits should be contingent on the submission of an IRS 990 and a basic financial statement. “Do we get a justification for what these funds are used for?” Trawinski asked at the March budget meeting while going over the approximately $63,000 allotted for local non-profits. “Do we get financial statements, or if these are non-profits, their 990s?" The simple answer is no. Although the borough does see their purchase orders, borough-supported non-profits need not provide IRS 990s or financial statements -- although …

Fair Lawn Recognized For Environmental Sustainability Efforts

This month the borough received its long-awaited bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey, the state's comprehensive sustainability program for municipalities.

After nearly three years spent establishing green initiatives throughout the community, the borough finally achieved official recognition this month for its ongoing environmental efforts. Fair Lawn learned March 8 that it had been awarded bronze certification by Sustainable Jersey, a statewide program that recognizes municipalities dedicated to going green, saving money and making progress toward sustainable living for years to come. Fair Lawn is one of 17 Sustainable Jersey-certified municipalities in Bergen County, “This is very exciting,” said councilwoman Lisa Swain, who spearheaded Fair Lawn’s sustainability efforts a few years back and formed the borough’s Green Team. “Educating the public about a sustainable future has been our goal…

Fraternal Order Practices Friendship, Charity and Benevolence

The Knights of Pythias are an international non-sectarian fraternal organization with a lodge in Fair Lawn

The New Jersey Knights of Pythias Charity Foundation donated a total of $20,000 to 25 charities Wednesday night at the group’s sixth annual charity presentation, held at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Local donation recipients included the Fair Lawn Ambulance Corps, Fair Lawn Community Policing, Fair Lawn Auxiliary Police, Fair Lawn Community Emergency Response Team, Fair Lawn Community Center, Fair Lawn Community School, Fair Lawn Fire Companies and Fair Lawn Rescue Squad. Despite the fraternal order’s continued generosity, its existence has flown largely under the radar. “It’s really, I think, an untold story,” proud Pythian Barry Winston said. “We don’t do publicity real well and there are not as many of us today as there used to be. …

Meet Kurt Peluso: Advocate for Young Families

A brief background on new councilman Kurt Peluso and what inspired him to run for office

Democratic Councilman Kurt Peluso has already shown he’s not averse to lending a voice to those he feels are without one. Last Tuesday, Peluso went to bat for the taxpayers of Fair Lawn against what he considered the Republicans’ fiscally irresponsible municipal appointments. By bringing attention to the issue publicly, Peluso got new borough attorney Ron Mondello to agree to reduce his salary by 20 percent. Peluso, 28, said it was during his time at Fair Lawn High School that he first realized he could be an advocate for others. When the school opted to switch prom night from a Thursday to a Friday, Peluso said he became the spokesperson for Jewish members of the school’s student body who wouldn’t be able to attend a prom held on a Friday…
