Residents Encouraged to Drop Off Items for NJ Troops

The borough and police department have partnered with Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon to set up collection boxes at various municipal locations

The holidays have passed, but the borough and its police department are still collecting items for New Jersey soldiers. Fair Lawn has continued its partnership with local military troop morale-boosting non-profit Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon to support local soldiers serving overseas and asks that residents contribute to the cause. The borough has stationed public collection boxes at four municipal locations where residents can drop off items to be distributed to servicemen and women.  Boxes are set up at the municipal building, public library, senior center and community center. For a completel list of items accepted by Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon, see the attached flyer. -- Follow Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Patch on Facebook and Twitter, and …

Fair Lawn Lays Wreaths to Honor Veterans and Their Families

On Saturday, Fair Lawn participated in a wreath-laying ceremony courtesy of Wreaths Across America to honor and commemorate the service of military veterans during the holiday season.

Borough officials laid wreaths Saturday as part of the national Wreaths Across America campaign that honors and remembers the service of United States military veterans during the holiday season. About a dozen of Fair Lawn's living military veterans attended the ceremony, which was emceed by Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove.  Resident Rich Seibel, who organized the borough's inaugural wreath-laying event, said keeping veterans in mind during the holiday season, when many are away from their families, is especially important. “As a father of a marine who was over there during the holidays, we’re not having a hell of a lot of fun while our kids are overseas," said Seibel, whose son Jordan served in Afghanistan. "You’re hanging in your basement …

Does anyone know the year that Memorial Park, formerly known as the sand pit, was officially opened? My guess 1949 or 1950. At that time, I was a member of the Fair Lawn Boy's Club and about nine or ten years old. Bob Shechtman and I were the first flag bearers. We marched in the parade and made our way down Berdan Avenue proudly carrying the State and US flags. Zak's pictures brought back this …   more ›

Do You Know a Vietnam Vet?

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund wants a photo for every name on "The Wall" in D.C.

What if you could put a face to every name on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial? The VVMF hopes you can. The National Call for Photos is a project organized by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to match a headshot or portrait photograph to every service member listed on The Wall. The pictures will be displayed in an exhibit at the future Education Center at The Wall, an underground visitors center to be built near the Vietnam Veterans and the Lincoln memorials. Everyday, the center will celebrate the birthdays of service members who died during the Vietnam War by featuring their photos on a giant digital wall. So far, 25,526 veterans have complete profiles with at least one photograph, according to George Pojani, a research associate at the …
