Water Meter Service Charge May Quadruple by 2014
Council agreed to move forward with a gradual rate increase in the service charge for residential water meters that will net the borough more than $1.3 million over three years
The amount Fair Lawn property owners pay in quarterly water bills is likely to rise soon. At the borough manager’s request, council has preliminarily agreed to implement a gradual quadrupling of the water meter service charge over the next three years. As soon as the ordinance is enacted -- likely by the end of the month -- residents, who currently pay a $5 per quarter service charge, will see a service charge increase of $5 per year for the next three years, up to $20 per quarter by 2014. That means by 2014, each household will be paying at least $60 more in water bills per year, not including the possibility of usage rate increases, which themselves have risen more than 20 percent in the past three years.
