Sleep Center Scare, Annual Crime Rates Released Top FL-SB News

An Elmwood Park man is behind bars Thursday after he allegedly threatened to "kill everybody" at a Fair Lawn sleep center Wednesday afternoon and resisted arrest.  Fair Lawn's increase in index crimes over the past four years is due almost entirely to a jump in burglaries. All index crimes except for motor vehicle thefts dropped last year, according to the 2011 Uniform Crime Report. Fair Lawn will swear in its three newest police officers at a council meeting in January and expects them to be on the road in town by October 2013. Police officers made an effort to be seen at district public schools this week to allay parental fears following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. A Fair Lawn man spoke out against McDonald's after his young daughter was treated to a helping of Fox News with her Happy Meal last weekend. Following a string of personal attacks on his parenting and political affiliation, Craig Lechner then penned an explanation for his decision to go public with his fast food fight. John Dohms, a Fair Lawn native who suffers from dementia, has been missing from his home in Newark, Del. for about a month and his family believes there's a small chance he could return to his hometown. A police car rear-ended a vehicle that stopped abruptly in front of it on Fair Lawn Avenue Tuesday. No one was injured in the minor crash that police are calling "weather-related." The state Department of Treasury is working to help residents whose mail never made it to government offices after all of the mail aboard a postal truck was destroyed in a deadly crash last month. A mail carrier from Fair Lawn suffered head trauma after the postal truck he was driving was struck by a passing vehicle in Mahwah, police said.  Fair Lawn's Historic Preservation Commission sponsored a free program on the 100th anniversary of the Fair Lawn Fire Department. Deputy Mayor and Ex-Chief John Cosgrove provided a multimedia presentation. Paul Dombrowski, 40, of Fair Lawn, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated arson and four other counts in connection with a suspicious fire that broke out overnight Monday at a Berdan Avenue home. Maryann Sahoury is suing the video production company who used her in an instructional breastfeeding video that was posted on the internet and later spliced into a pornographic video. The superintendent will respond to a series of resident-submitted questions submitted about the school budget and taxes at a public meeting in late September or early October. A female resident was struck by a Hoboken-bound train near the Broadway Station in Fair Lawn Tuesday morning. Speaking at a Democratic County Committee event in Fair Lawn Wednesday, Cory Booker said he's strongly considering seeking higher office in the future. Following an internal affairs investigation, the borough has brought administrative charges against Capt. Joseph Cook, his attorney said. In November, the attorney for a police lieutenant who brought suit against Captain Joseph Cook had alleged that Cook and an administrative assistant were destroying documents related to the lawsuit. Cook has been cleared of any wrongdoing, his attorney confirmed. Council adopted a $46.4 million budget Tuesday that calls for a 4-percent tax increase on the average assessed home and includes no employee furloughs or layoffs. Hundreds of seniors beat the mid-90s heat Thursday to walk at their commencement. The admissions director of a Fair Lawn nursing home has been charged with theft, forgery and impersonation of another in connection with alleged looting of an 82-year-old man's bank account. Officer Juan Rodriguez will resign his position with the Fair Lawn Police Department effective June 29 and join the Paterson Police Department. The borough would like to have numbered spaces and commuter kiosks installed at the Radburn Train Station by 2014.
