Cosgrove's Pleas to Extend Manager's Contract Failed

Recently released closed session minutes detail Fair Lawn borough council's decision not to provide the manager a vote of confidence that he'd be retained after this year.

Mayor John Cosgrove went to bat for manager Tom Metzler during a failed closed session conversation he called back in February to discuss extending the manager's contract, Patch has learned. According to recently released closed session minutes, Cosgrove repeatedly asked council members to reassure Metzler that they would extend his contract until the end of 2014. Extending Metzler was important, he said, because the borough had already turned over its manager four times in the past seven years and, for the sake of continuity, could not afford to do it again. "What I tried to do was frame the situation and let the council members know that Tom had received numerous (job) offers and that in order to keep him we really needed to give him a …

Cosgrove Expresses Hope for Unity, Progress in Opening Speech [Transcript]

Below is a transcript of John Cosgrove's opening remarks upon being sworn in as mayor of Fair Lawn.

Good evening, I’d just like to thank everyone for being here tonight, and I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year and thank the people of Fair Lawn for giving me the honor and privilege to serve as your mayor. Special thanks go out to my friend the Honorable Judge Miguel de la Carerra for swearing me in. Miggy and I have been friends since we attended Radburn School almost 50 years ago. I also want to thank the council for giving me this opportunity and thank Mayor Baratta for the outstanding job she did in 2012. I know I have big shoes to fill, actually in Mayor Baratta’s case, six inch high heels, but I thank her for all her hard work and dedication to the people of Fair Lawn. I’m proud to serve on this council with such dedicated …

'Mr. Fair Lawn' John Cosgrove Tabbed as Next Mayor

Lifelong borough volunteer John Cosgrove will be sworn in as Fair Lawn's next mayor at the Jan. 3 council re-organization meeting.

You need spend only a few brief minutes with John Cosgrove to understand why he's affectionately called "Mr. Fair Lawn." The tireless borough volunteer and community advocate whose family has called Fair Lawn home for over a century seems to know everyone and have a pulse on everything going on in town. When Cosgrove is sworn in as mayor next week, he'll become the official face of the community that always has been the center of his universe. "I cant say I aspired to it," said Cosgrove, who currently serves as deputy mayor, "but even when I was in high school people would always joke to me, 'You should be the mayor.' It’s finally coming to fruition." Jeanne Baratta, who back in January became Fair Lawn's first Republican mayor in over a …

Cosgrove Dispels News Report; Won't Run for State Senate

Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove said there is no truth to a news report that he is on a shortlist of potential Republican State Senate candidates.

Fair Lawn Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove dismissed media speculation Thursday that he would challenge Sen. Bob Gordon in next year's New Jersey Senate race.  "I'm not going to seek nor will I accept that seat. I never even thought about it," said Cosgrove, responding to a Wednesday report on PolitickerNJ.com that tossed out his name as one of four Bergen County Republicans who might take on Gordon in 2013. "I've already called Bob and told him that I'm staying in Fair Lawn." Cosgrove, the lone Republican elected in Fair Lawn last year, said he had no idea why he'd been listed in the report and said his desire is to remain in Fair Lawn to serve out the entirety of his term. In addition to Cosgrove, PolitickerNJ listed former Freeholder John …

Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years of Pride, Dedication and Tradition

Fair Lawn's Historic Preservation Commission sponsored a free program on the 100th anniversary of the Fair Lawn Fire Department.

Despite competition from the first presidential debate and the Yankees' division-clinching final regular season game, nearly 100 people turned out Wednesday night to hear ex-Fire Chief John Cosgrove's presentation on the 100th anniversary of the Fair Lawn Fire Department at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Cosgrove's PowerPoint presentation, which was supplemented with old photos and a video [see attached], detailed the history and tradition of the department from its founding in November 1911 up to the present day.  During his presentation, the deputy mayor touched on the first days of the department, its acquisition of early apparatus, its long line of chiefs and some of the largest and most memorable fires it has fought, all with an …
