Outdoor Classroom Dedicated at Thomas Jefferson Middle School [PHOTOS]

A two-year collaborative process culminated Friday afternoon when Thomas Jefferson Middle School opened its outdoor classroom to students and teachers.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School unveiled its brand new outdoor classrom Friday afternoon at a brief dedication ceremony attended by assistant superintendent Natalie Lacatena, Mayor John Cosgrove and Councilwoman Lisa Swain. The classroom is the second phase of science teacher and environmental club advisor Susan Goldstein's three-phase plan to "recycle" previously unused space behind the school using grant money. The project's first phase was the addition of a raised planting bed located near where the outdoor classroom now exists. "This project took two years to complete and will enable classrooms in the school to have the opportunity to work outside," Principal Sherrie Galofaro said during her opening remarks Friday. "If you know Mrs. …

Storm-Damaged Lyncrest Outdoor Classroom Rebuilt

Lyncrest Elementary reopened its outdoor environmental center Tuesday through the efforts of the school, the borough of Fair Lawn and the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. The center was severely damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

Lyncrest Elementary re-opened its environmental center Tuesday for the first time since Superstorm Sandy left the school's winding nature trail impassable and sent a tree crashing through the landing of its outdoor classroom. Over the past few months, the school, the borough and the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission have joined forces to repair the center's damages so that Lyncrest students again can enjoy a hands-on opportunity to interact with nature and study the environment. "This was a joint community effort," Lyncrest principal Maria Corso said at Tuesday's re-dedication. "The borough of Fair Lawn paid for the lumber, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission did the work and this is what you have today." Corso said her vision for the …

Memorial Students, PVSC Team Up to Revitalize River Walk [Photos]

A team of Memorial School students and Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission employees worked in concert Thursday to revitalize the school's river walk.

Seventh and eighth grade Memorial School students and members of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission teamed up late Thursday morning to revitalize the river walk and eco-village located on the middle school's property along the Passaic River. PVSC River Restoration Program members used heavy machinery to haul and spread wood chips and remove site debris, while Memorial students gathered trash from the river's banks and collected dry leaves for the eco-village compost pile. Since partnering to construct the river walk nine years ago, the school and the commission have worked hand-in-hand to maintain the area by holding bi-annual cleanup days. Memorial science teacher Craig Cohen, who also heads the school's environmental club, said …

Annual Canoe Regatta Won't Be Held This Year

Fair Lawn's annual canoe race, postponed since summer, is tentatively rescheduled for next spring.

The Fair Lawn Canoe Regatta, postponed in June due to a lack of participants, will not be rescheduled this year. The borough had previously hoped to hold the race in September, to coincide with a bike rodeo for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, but assistant borough manager Jim Van Kruiningen said spring 2013 is now the target. Van Kruiningen did not know how the additional postponment would affect the status of the bike rodeo, which was proposed earlier this year by three enterprising Milnes middle schoolers. Van Kruiningen said this year's 1.8-mile canoe race, which starts on the Passaic River at Memorial Park and finishes at the Elmwood Park Marina, was a no-go without help from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. In past years…

Memorial School Grounds Get Ecological Makeover [Photo Gallery]

Seventh and eighth graders at Memorial Middle School spent Friday afternoon contributing to the ecological health of their school environment

In what teachers hope becomes an annual event, seventh and eighth grade students at Memorial Middle School took part in an all-encompassing environmental citizenship initiative Friday afternoon on school grounds. The event was tied in with this year’s bi-annual river cleanup visit from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, which nine years ago partnered with Memorial to construct the school’s river walk and helps maintain it to this day. For the past eight years, PVSC has worked with the school to conduct a Passaic River cleanup event on two Saturdays each year. “This is one of the stronger partnerships that PVSC has, and it gets stronger every year,” said PVSC public affairs director Tom Pietrykoski, noting that the Memorial cleanup is …

Four former Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission Supervisors Indicted

Three former administrators and the Mayor of Northvale - a former PVSC foreman - are charged with ordering employees to do personal work on company time.

Four former Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission supervisors were indicted today on charges they ordered employees to do repair work on their own homes and those of friends and relatives on company time. A state grand jury in Trenton charged three former administrators, Anthony Ardis, 57, of Paterson, Kevin Keogh, 45, of Roseland, and Chester Mazza, 70, of Totowa, and Northvale Mayor Paul Bazela, 44, of Northvale - who headed the carpenter’s shop at the PVSC - with conspiracy, official misconduct, pattern of official misconduct and theft by unlawful taking. “We allege that Ardis, Keogh and Mazza used their power and influence as senior administrators at the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission to exploit subordinates as free labor for their …
