PBA President Thanks Supporters for Attending Officer Collura Memorial

In a letter to the editor, Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association president Michael O'Brien sends his thanks to those who attended the 10th Anniversary ceremonies Wednesday to honor fallen officer Mary Ann Collura.

On behalf of Fair Lawn PBA Local 67, words cannot express our sincere gratitude to our brothers and sisters in blue, emergency services, family members, neighbors, friends, and elected officials who attended our special memorial for fallen Fair Lawn Police Officer Mary Ann Collura on April 17. The outpouring of support comforted many of us on that distressing day and we wholeheartedly appreciate the Memorial wreaths, Police Honor Guards, Motorcycle Squads, and those who took time out of their day to be a part of something so important.  It's hard to believe that 10 years has come and gone since our sister was taken from us. Every day, we think of her and her family, and remember the positive impact she has had on all of our lives.  We will…

Fair Lawn Amassed Area's Largest Toys for Tots Collection

The Fair Lawn police, rescue squad and police dispatchers teamed up with the U.S. Marine Corps this holiday season to collect Toys for Tots.

Fair Lawn emergency service workers set quite the bar for toy collections this past holiday season. In their first year participating in the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program, the Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association, in concert with the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and Fair Lawn Police Dispatchers collected more toys than any of the other 42 collection stations throughout the area, PBA president Michael O'Brien said. O'Brien said he had no idea they had collected 3,041 toys until recently when the PBA received a tally of the items they collected and a plaque from the Saddle River Detachment No. 1211 Marine Corps League recognizing them for their contributions. "I was truly inspired by my brothers and sister as we worked as a team…

Police Force Has 'No Confidence' in Chief and Captain

The manager said he will be thoroughly investigating the matter and making a recommendation to council on how to proceed

The Fair Lawn police union announced Friday that it had taken a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the police department under Chief Erik Rose and Capt. Joseph Cook. Det. David Boone, president of Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 67, said 92 percent of the members supported the no confidence vote, which took place Wednesday. "Never in the history of our department have the members found it necessary to take such a vote, but never have we found ourselves in a position such as we are now," Boone said. Since 2007, rank-and-file officers have filed multiple lawsuits against the department, Rose and Cook that allege harassment, discrimination and retaliatory tactics. Boone said the same pattern of behavior alleged of …

Letter to the Editor: PBA Prez Explains Why Police Didn't Accept Furloughs

Fair Lawn Policemen's Benevolent Association President David Boone responds to reader's inquiries about police layoffs and furlough days last year.

Due to questions I've received from readers regarding the police layoffs last year, I asked PBA president David Boone to respond and present the police department's perspective on the matter.  Here's what he had to say: It's easy to say that we should just take furlough days and the matter is over, but the answer is a little more complicated because you are dealing with public safety and the safety of officers.  I will try to address it though in these points: 1.  We were already down quite a few officers and if officers did agree to take furlough days it would have caused overtime and that in turn would have been more expensive to the borough than the savings.  It doesn't make sense to do this option. 2.  With officers on furlough days it…

Bruce, drive around the neighboring towns. You'll see Fair Lawn has been pretty good on the cleanup. Just yesterday I drove down Maple Ave. Looking down the sidestreets in Glen Rock and Ridgewood, you'd be amazed at the amount of branches still down and not picked up. Our people did a great job in my opinion.   more ›
