River Road District Encourages Shopping Locally During the Holidays

Businesses on Fair Lawn's River Road traditionally decorate their storefront windows during the holiday season.

The holidays are a special time of year on Fair Lawn’s River Road. Brightly painted storefront windows plus streetlights decorated with festive wreaths, bows and twinkling lights invite shoppers and visitors to join in the celebration of the season. The warm welcome provided by the businesses of the River Road District adds to the hometown feeling of hospitality and goodwill, noted River Road Improvement Corporation president Bob Landzettel. Rent Increase Forces Tattoo Parlor to Relocate

Jerzey Tat, a River Road tattoo parlor that opened last November, will close up shop in Fair Lawn at the end of next month.

Less than a year after opening up shop on River Road, Bruce Walker has decided to take his tattoo business elsewhere. Faced recently with the prospect of a 100 percent rent increase over the next two years, the Saddle Brook resident and owner of Jerzey Tat said that even as the shop has been gaining momentum, he can't justify staying in Fair Lawn. "I’m not established yet, I’m still getting my feet wet. I’m still building my clientele," said Walker, whose last day in Fair Lawn will be Oct. 31. "I don’t have that kind of cash to really put out for what they’re asking, especially for this location." Walker's been paying $1000 per month since he moved into his current location on River Road between Krauszers and Shop-Rite last November. He …

The River Road Improvement Corporation's Holiday Happenings promotion offers a 15 percent discount at participating businesses

For nine days this holiday season, as part of the River Road Improvement Corporation's Holiday Happenings promotion, local businesses and restaurants will be offering a 15 percent discount on their products and services.  In addition to the savings, customers at each of the 24 participating locations will also be eligible to win prizes, including an iPad2 (donated by Columbia Bank), $500 in River Road District Dollars and gift cards ranging from $25 to $100 from River Road District businesses and restaurants. PHOTOS: Classic Car Show Winners Announced

The River Road Improvement Corporation sponsored the Classic Car Show, which was held during Sunday's River Road Street Fair

And the winner for "Best Overall" car at the 9th Annual River Road Classic Car Show goes to...Jeff Scheffer, of Clifton, for his 1969 Dodge Charger. The Classic Car Show, sponsored by the River Road Improvement Corporation (RRIC), takes place annually during the Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce's River Road Street Fair. Two $100 cash prizes were awarded to the “Best Costumed Classic Car Owner” and the “Best Decorated Themed Classic Car.” Other awards included, “Most Awesome,” “A Cool Ride," and "Best Hot Rod," presented by River Road-based Tribal Iron Custom Choppers, a custom motorcycle designer and builder that had its own bikes on display Sunday. Don't Miss the River Road Street Fair and Classic Car Show This Weekend

The annual River Road Street Fair and Classic Car Show will be held Sunday, Oct. 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With the Giants on a bye week, why not spend your Sunday strolling the grounds at the River Road Street Fair? Sponsored by the Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce, the annual street fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and will have more than 100 booths spanning River Road between Fair Lawn and Berdan Avenues. The Bagel Boss, a bagel shop that also serves hot meals for breakfast and lunch, held its grand opening ceremony Friday at 10:30 a.m. Bagel Boss, which is co-owned by Paul Alves, of Bloomfield, and Nasser Ali, of Fair Lawn, offers a wide variety of bagels and cream cheese spreads, available via delivery and catering. They also serve breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, subs and salads. Bagel Boss opened in late July, and is offering: 50 percent off everything from Oct. 7-9, free coffee from Oct. 7 to Oct. 14 and 50 percent off everything every Sunday in October (Oct.16th, Oct. 23rd, Oct.30th). Douglas Wojcik, of Elmwood Park, has been announced as the winner of the River Road Food Fest’s iPad2 drawing. Presented by the River Road Improvement Corporation on Tuesday, Sept. 13, the River Road Food Fest was a one-day promotion in which 13 businesses in the River Road District offered a 15 percent discount on all food and drinks. Participants who took their purchase receipts to the Community Bank of Bergen County by 4 p.m. that Friday were entered in a drawing to win an iPad2. Wojcik, who patronized both the Empress Diner and B&B Liquors that day, was chosen as the lucky iPad2 winner out of 158 total entries. The River Road Improvement Corporation, a non-profit business organization that works to foster the River Road district’s economic development, announced the addition of two men to its Board of Trustees Wednesday who have long ties to the Fair Lawn community. John Melissas, owner of the Empress Diner and Richard Noorigian, operating partner of Noorigian Properties, bring the total number of RRIC trustees to 15. “We are pleased to welcome John and Rich to the board,” RRIC president Robert Landzettel said in a statement. “We look forward to their contributions as we continue to improve the River Road District and encourage Fair Lawn residents and consumers from surrounding communities to shop and dine locally.”  The Melissas family has owned…
