Saddle Brook Appoints New Schools Chief

The Saddle Brook Board of Education Monday approved the hiring of Dr. Richard Katz as its new superintendent of schools.

The Saddle Brook Board of Education Monday introduced and approved a five-year contract for its new superintendent of schools. Richard Katz, the current superintendent, principal and director of special services for the Clinton-Glen Gardner School District in Hunterdon County will assume the reins of the district on July 1 at a salary of $157,500. He'll replace the retiring superintendent Kathryn Fedina, who returned to work this week after being out for the past 2.5 months on medical leave.  Katz, who has held a dual superintendent/principal role in the one-school, 500-student Clinton-Glen Gardner district since 2009, said he chose Saddle Brook for its close-knit community and commitment to improvement. "I’m in a small community now and …

Former Trustee Returns to Saddle Brook Board of Education

Jerry Taylor, former vice president of the Saddle Brook Board of Education, will fill the seat vacated in March by trustee Keith Rosso.

Former Saddle Brook Board of Education trustee Jerry Taylor will fill the board seat vacated last month by Keith Rosso. After interviewing four replacement candidates, the board unanimously chose to appoint Taylor, who served as the board's vice president last year but opted to run for council last November rather than seek re-election to the board. "All of the candidates did well," board trustee Bob White said. "It was a matter of the board’s opinion that Jerry did the best. He has the past experience on the board. He was the most suitable candidate." White said he hopes Taylor provides some stability to the board, which has already had two trustees resign this year. In addition to Rosso, who left in March to take a job out of state, …

Saddle Brook Board of Education Adopts $31.8 Million Budget

The 2013-2014 Saddle Brook school budget, adopted Wednesday, includes a 2 percent tax increase.

The Saddle Brook Board of Education adopted a $31.8 million school budget Wednesday that includes a 2 percent tax increase. "It's the lowest [tax impact] since I've been here and, I think, in many years," business administrator Raymond Karaty said. Despite dealing with rising employee health costs, out-of-district tuition increases and flat state aid, the budget committee was able to come in at cap while maintaining all of the district's current programs and staff, Karaty said. Karaty said the committee remained within the cap by cutting down on maintenance projects, funding capital projets with capital reserves and surplus, and exploring employee health insurance alternatives to the State Health Benefits Plan. The budget allocates a …

Saddle Brook School Board Trustee Steps Down

Board of Education trustee Keith Rosso announced his plans Wednesday to vacate his seat on the board and accept a job in Texas.

For the second time since January's reorganization, a newly elected Saddle Brook Board of Education trustee is stepping down. Keith Rosso, 24, announced his resignation Wednesday, NorthJersey.com reported. The politically precocious Rosso, who was first elected to the board while still a student at Saddle Brook High School, announced at Wednesday's meeting that he would be leaving New Jersey to take a job in Texas. His last meeting will be March 20. The Stevens Institute of Technology grad is currently an associate at Manhattan investment management company AllianceBernstein, according to his LinkedIn profile. Rosso served on the board from 2007 to 2010, and again from February 2012 to the present. He rejoined the board last year to fill …

Board Narrows Down Candidates in Saddle Brook Superintendent Search

Saddle Brook Board of Education president Marilyn Nasello said she expects the board will have selected a finalist for the open superintendent job by early April.

The search for a successor to retiring Saddle Brook superintendent Kathryn Fedina should be finished within a month.  The Saddle Brook Board of Education, which concluded its first round of superintendent candidate interview sessions Tuesday night, expects to have finished whittling down its field of more than 30 total applicants for the position by early April, Board President Marilyn Nasello said Monday. The board has been working with Sousa and Stern Educational Consultants, a private firm with expertise in conducting superintendent searches, since late last year when Fedina announced she would retire when her contract expired at the end of this school year. Sousa and Stern, who also conducted the district's previous superintendent …

Interim Superintendent Stands In for Ailing Fedina

The Saddle Brook Board of Education appointed an interim superintendent Thursday to fill in for superintendent Kathryn Fedina, who is dealing with medical issues.

As a precautionary measure, the Saddle Brook Board of Education Thursday appointed an interim schools chief to temporarily run the district until ailing superintendent Kathryn Fedina can return to work. Starting Monday, Michael Roth, a retired superintendent who has run school districts in Morris, Union and Passaic counties, will handle the district's day-to-day operations for at least the next two weeks, board trustee Robert White said. "No one knows how long Dr. Fedina will be out. She had been in and out of work for the past month and it's unclear when she'll be able to return," White said. "The Board of Education felt it was necessary to bring someone in to take over for her.  Especially since this time of year is particularly busy." …

Scott Ganz's Death, Board Trustee Appointment Top This Week's News

Missed any of this week's Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook news? It's all right here.

Fair Lawn native and army veteran Scott Ganz, 30, was discovered dead at his home in Orlando, Fla. this week. Regina Barrale, 44, was sworn in as a Saddle Brook Board of Education trustee Monday night. Council has elected to reallocate $80,000 in county grants originally intended for the construction of a skate park at the former Walsh Pool to a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove. A Plaza Road resident allegedly stole from his roommate on multiple occasions and then adopted his roommate's identity to make credit card purchases, police said. Bruce Walker's tattoo parlor, which closed in Fair Lawn at the end of October, reopened Tuesday in Saddle Brook. Borough council agreed Tuesday to take the municipal building to a four-day per week…

Saddle Brook Board of Education Appoints Replacement Trustee

Regina Barrale, 44, was sworn in as a Saddle Brook Board of Education trustee Monday night.

After two hours of interviews with five potential trustee candidates, the Saddle Brook Board of Education selected Regina Barrale Monday to fill the board seat vacated last month by Christopher Winnie. Barrale, a health and physical education teacher in East Rutherford, won over her new colleagues with her experience and passion for the job, Board of Education president Marilyn Nasello said. "We're looking for someone who's going to help be the future here, go forward with continuity, and she clearly displayed that in her interview," said Nasello, who cited Barrale's experience as a teacher and her "obvious commitment," to the district as factors that persuaded her to support Barrale. Barrale, who has two young children at Long Memorial …

Board of Education to Appoint Replacement Trustee

At Monday's special meeting, the board will name a replacement for trustee Christopher Winnie, who announced his resignation last month.

The Saddle Brook Board of Education will appoint a new board trustee Monday to fill the unexpired term of Christopher Winnie, who resigned his post on Jan. 16. The board will convene Monday at 7 p.m. for a special meeting at Saddle Brook High School/Middle School to choose Winnie's replacement, who will serve from February through the end of the year. At the special meeting, board members will recess to closed session and conduct interviews with individuals interested in filling the vacated seat. Following the interview period, the meeting will reconvene in open session and a replacement for Winne will be named. Winnie, a longtime Saddle Brook resident, said he resigned last month to avoid a potential conflict of interest but declined to …

Saddle Brook Focusing on School Safety

The school district adapted school visitation policies after last month's Newtown, Connecticut shooting, the first effort in a reevaluation of school security.

In light of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, last month, the Saddle Brook school district is reevaluating its security policies. In a letter to parents earlier in January, Superintendent Kathryn Fedina said that “reflection on the recent past requires us to change past practices.” The first policy the board revisited was school visits. “It definitely had an impact,” deputy police chief and board trustee Bob White said, referring to the Newtown massacre. “We were going over our security overall, and that was one area we needed to address.” Visitors to the schools have always been required to sign in and provide a reason for their visit, White told Patch, but the new policy requires guests to call ahead to make an …

That's all great, but what about also having an armed guard at the front entrance at all times, only having one entrance way that people go in and out..all other doors are always locked, having bars on windows or a security alarm system on all windows, establishing place where kids/teachers can go/hide in the event something occurs that are only known by the teachers, etc.. These are just some …   more ›
