Son Pulls Father From Burning Saddle Brook House, Both Hospitalized

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified Robert Myerjack, Jr. as a neighbor. A Saddle Brook man and his son were both hospitalized after a fire spread through the Oxford Avenue home they share shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, Saddle Brook Fire Chief Bob Meyers said. Robert Myerjack, Jr. was outside in the backyard of the home when the fire broke out, but ran back in to save his elderly father, according to Myerjack, Jr.'s niece, Jessica Davidson. A neighbor called 911. Davidson said both men were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with minor burns. "My uncle has some burns on his neck but nothing serious, thankfully," she said. Saddle Brook Firefighters Battled Factory Blaze Into Early Tuesday Morning

Firefighters waited for hours, standing by as the fire grew, before PSE&G arrived on the scene to shut down live power lines, Mayor Karen Chamberlain said.

Saddle Brook firefighters spent hours during the brunt of Hurricane Sandy battling a fire at an abandoned toy factory on Fifth Street between Victor Street and Hillside Avenue. The blaze broke out around 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Amloid toy factory, but crews weren't able to fight it full bore until hours later because of live power and gas lines at the fire scene. PSE&G, which was summoned to cut the power but had pulled its workers off the roads due to the storm, remained unreachable for four hours, Saddle Brook Mayor Karen Chamberlain said. By the time Public Service did arrive, the fire had grown considerably and engulfed the building. Crews weren't able to get the blaze under control until early Tuesday morning.
