All Saddle Brook public schools went into a brief lockdown Thursday morning after rumors surfaced of a possible school shooting at Elmwood Park's Memorial High School.
Saddle Brook public schools were locked down Thursday morning for about 15 minutes following rumors out of Elmwood Park that a school shooting had occurred at Memorial High School, Deputy Chief Robert White said. White said he was contacted by Saddle Brook High School principal Jim Sarto around 9:40 a.m. asking if he could substantiate rumors circulating about a possible school shooting in Elmwood Park that had locked down schools in that district. White had not heard anything, but as a precautionary measure, Saddle Brook went into a lockdown following their phone conversation. "It was precautionary on our end," White said. The suspect and an alleged accomplice in the TD Bank robbery in Saddle Brook Friday morning are in custody, Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler said.
Police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for the armed robbery of the TD Bank on Floral Lane in Saddle Brook Friday morning, Police Chief Robert Kugler said. The man, identified as Jorge Rodriguez, and an alleged accomplice were taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. Friday after being found in a Graham Terrace home just a couple blocks from the bank, Kugler said. Rodriguez, of South River, was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful use. Another man, whom police found in the home and believe to be an associate of Rodriguez, was also taken into custody, but is only considered a person of interest at this point, Kugler said. Saddle Brook Police uncovered a 21-ton shipment of stolen Muenster cheese inside a refrigerated trailer at an NJ Turnpike rest area Tuesday, Police Chief Robert Kugler said.
SADDLE BROOK, NJ -- New Jersey police sniffed out an Illinois man's alleged plot to sell 21 tons of stolen Muenster cheese on the black market, Police Chief Robert Kugler said. Cops caught up with the alleged cheese bandit on Tuesday at a New Jersey Turnpike rest area in Ridgefield, where he was found inside a parked tractor-trailer that contained the 42,000 pounds of cheese, he said. Veniamin K. Balika, of Plainfield, Ill., had been traveling cross country with the stinky haul since allegedly obtaining it from K&K Cheese Company in Cashton, Wisc., by passing fraudulent paperwork. To further its mission of maintaining an open line of communication with residents, the Saddle Brook Police Department recently launched its own Facebook page. The department already sends out Nixle emergency alerts, tweets and has operated a website since 1995, but until late January had not had a presence on Facebook. A burglar made off with approximately $700 from the East Wok Chinese Restaurant on Market Street early Monday morning, police said
Saddle Brook police are investigating an overnight burglary at East Wok Chinese Restaurant on Market Street. The owner of East Wok arrived to work Monday morning to find the restaurant's Plexiglass front door cut open and removed, police said. Approximately $700 was taken from the cash register and an area nearby where the restaurant stores coins, according to a police statement. Police believe the burglary likely occurred early Monday morning, after business closed the night before, Chief Bob Kugler said. The Sheriff's Office's Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted Saddle Brook police in securing evidence. Workers at Bagels & Beyond, located at 460 Market Street, have twice encountered a suspicious man trying to enter the building in the early morning hours this week, police said.
A suspicious man has tried unsuccessfully to break into a Saddle Brook bagel shop in the middle of the night on two separate occasions this week, police said. Police responded to the second attempt around 4 a.m. Thursday after a Bagels & Beyond employee heard banging on the front and rear doors of the building and opened the rear door to find a heavy-set man wearing a black sweatshirt and a ski mask, police said. Upon seeing the bagel store employee, the man fled south toward Sylvan Street, according to reports.
