Sandy-Induced Fuel Shortage Posed Biggest Problem for Borough

Fair Lawn will review its contingency plans for fuel backup after the fragility of its current setup was exposed during Superstorm Sandy.

Superstorm Sandy played out just as borough manager Tom Metzler told his staff it would. He anticipated the devastation to the Jersey Shore, the flooding of the New York City subway system and the prolonged power outages across the region. “Prepare to be without power for two weeks,” he told his staff a couple days before the storm came to shore. Metzler said he knew exactly what to expect because he’d been studying Sandy, or a storm just like her, for over two decades. “In 1990 when I entered emergency management, the very first conference I attended they said this was the worst East Coast scenario,” Metzler said. “A Category 1 hurricane coming to shore between Cape May and Atlantic City with a 20 mile-an-hour forward motion.” He laid it …

PSEG: Full Power in Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook by Midnight Saturday

More than 95 percent of customers in both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook have regained power, but the unlucky few who are still out should expect to be back on the grid by midnight Saturday, according to PSEG.

Barring any additional outages or restoration delays brought about by Wednesday's nor'easter, both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook should be completely back on the grid by midnight Saturday, according to PSEG's most recent restoration schedule. As of Wednesday morning, 607, or 4.5 percent, of Fair Lawn customers and 107, or 1.6 percent, of Saddle Brook customers were still without power. Crews are expected to finish up in Fair Lawn by midnight Friday and in Saddle Brook by midnight Saturday. A number of municipal services continue to be affected in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and in anticipation of Wednesday's winter storm. Week in Review: Sandy Hits Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook

A timeline of the Superstorm that swept through the area Monday.

The borough seeks to be more proactive in its preparation for and response to the impending hurricane projected to rip through town late Monday into Tuesday. Saddle Brook officials have been preparing for the storm much like they did last year for Hurricane Irene. The superintendents in each district have cancelled school on Monday and Tuesday due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy. Deputy Emergency Managment Coordinator Wendy Demeraski said the borough is expecting winds in town to reach hurricane level around 3 p.m. and remain that way for about 12 hours. Between 5,000 and 10,000 homes are without power in Fair Lawn, according to PSE&G's outage maps. The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation has moved some of its patients to nearby …

Fair Lawn Plagued By Smoking Live Wires

Live wires down around town continue to smoke and alarm residents, police said.

The nearly three-dozen power lines down around Fair Lawn are not only preventing borough workers from clearing tree-blocked roadways, they've also exposed live wires that continue to smoke and alarm residents, police said. Lt. Derek Bastinck said police don't have the manpower to stand guard at every live wire in town, but they have cordoned them off to ensure the public's safety. However, as the wires continue to glow and smoke like a slow fuse, Bastinck said police have received an abundance of calls from concerned residents who report them as small electrical fires. Bastinck said Tuesday that smoking wires on 26th Street, Morlot Avenue and Van Saun Place, and Plaza Road and Ramsey Terrace were "going pretty good" and have generated the …

Fair Lawn Municipal Building Phones Back Up

The borough was experiencing telephone issues throughout the morning and early afternoon but the problem appears to be fixed.

UPDATE: 5:20 p.m., Wednesday The borough's regular phone lines are up and running again, police chief Erik Rose confirmed. From mid-morning until early afternoon, incoming phone calls placed to Fair Lawn's municipal offices, emergency operations center and police department non-emergency line had been interrupted due to a telephone service provider problem.  To get around the fact that outside calls made directly to borough departments were being met with a busy signal, the borough has rigged a temporary work around that allowed callers who dial (201)-796-1700 to reach an automated phone tree that then could direct them to their intended call recipient. Rose said the police department was in the process of setting up a similar fix when the…

Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook Cancel School Wednesday

In wake of the power outages throughout town, including at school buildings in Fair Lawn, both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook have cancelled school Wednesday.

With power out across large portions of Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook, and trees blocking roadways near school buildings in Fair Lawn, both districts have cancelled school Wednesday. Radburn School in Fair Lawn is without power and an enormous tree with tangled wires is blocking Radburn Road at the northbound approach to the building. Board of Education president Michael Rosenberg said he wasn't sure what other school buildings may be without power or impassable, but that with all of that blocked roads and outages throughout town, including among faculty and staff members, schools would stay closed for at least another day. Memorial School in Fair Lawn, which flooded during Irene last year and remained closed for the next month, survived …
