On the Blog Post Op Ed: Fair Lawn School Board Embraces The Past at Our Kids’ Expense

I think you have to ask yourself how much time the majority of young people-- and adults-- are going to spend actually playing the formal team sports for which artificial turf is intended. Most people who do keep fit and do physical exercise don't do it by playing pickup football!

ReplyI don't really expect the board to change its mind. Fair Lawn has already made it clear that organized team recreational sports are a very high priority (look at the way Walsh Pool/Dubrow field was handled).

Did you do your own research about it, or did you just read something the football coaches and phys ed teachers handed you? We are talking about the same phys ed department who believes it is SAFER to make nearsighted kids go without glasses during phys ed, and asks parents to jump through hoops (call for permission slip!) to *allow* their kids to wear visual correction in order to be able to see properly in phys ed.

Michael, it's a sad fact that in an information-rich era, Fair Lawn is more interested in investing in recreational sports in the schools than information literacy. What was the first thing cut when we needed to cut-- the school media specialist/librarians. Now, you're shelling out yet more for fancy adjuncts recreational sports activities? A little research has suggested that the artificial turf isn't really much safer, and it does take maintenance.

On the article 'Scary, Graphic' Text Message Circulates at Ridgewood Elementary School

I didn't have a cell phone until I was 35. But any child who does have some freedom may need a cell phone now-- because the payphones of our child no longer exist, so when a kid needs to call a parent, either they are using their own phone or begging the use of someone else's. There's no giving your kid a (dime, quarter, etc) to call Mom if something goes wrong; either they have a cell or they can't call.
I don't text either-- but it sounds like this message was also being promulgated via email. And even kids who don't text can't keep their friends from texting them if they know the number. -

Jules Vernon is right, we do need enforcement of pedestrian crossing laws. Mind you, if the police chief could just send a uniform out to cross the road in front of the municipal building every hour or so, maybe Fair Lawn drivers would learn to stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. As it stands, we all know full well drivers figure why should they stop, the pedestrian knows if they push their luck they'll end up losing to the car.

ReplyBy the way, after a recent council meeting I was told not to worry about Fair Lawn All Sports' plan to destroy the playground at Walsh park, it wouldn't happen for years and my children would be grown by then.
So, by "would not renege on their commitment to the Fair Lawn fifth and sixth graders who had requested its construction" I suspect the council means it won't renege, it'll just wait until those 5th and 6th graders grow up and move away to get rid of the skate park equipment. -

"In September 2012, Akselrod waived her right to a trial by jury and accepted a pretrial intervention on fourth-degree child abuse and neglect charges, which carry no jail time.
Per the agreement, Akselrod must pay $125 in fines and complete a 12-month PTI program that requires her to receive psychiatric counseling or take parenting classes. She is permitted to have contact with her children. Akselrod's criminal record will be expunged if she completes the program."How is that not being held accountable?

So, what is the yearly upkeep fee for the artificial turf, and was that fee determined by talking to the sales reps, or checking with districts that have actual artificial turf?
