Special Needs Taekwondo Classes, Age 14 to Young Adult

This program will address the needs of teens and young adults, age 14 and up, with Down Syndrome, mild Autism, ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s, other learning or cognitive disabilities, as well as challenging behaviors. We use various methods of instruction (such as multi-sensory)based on each individual’s abilities or needs. Two Instructors (or one Instructor and one Assistant Instructor) will be present at each class.Depending on individual needs, aides may be employed to further assist students.
Beginner Taekwondo presented in a fun, energetic, yet structured format, with positive behavioral supports and guidance to promote self esteem and to encourage cooperation. As with our younger groups, the easy step-by-step exercises and basic techniques are presented gradually and are designed to help students develop focus, awareness, balance, coordination and fitness. Self-defense techniques are introduced and developed through various drills and routines, practice with targets, pads and dummies, and other fun martial arts activities which also encourage social interaction and cooperation with others. Emphasis is placed on self-control and respect of self and others.After attending subsequent sessions,and with continued development, belt advancement may be possible.
