Fair Lawn Recognizes World War II POW

Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

The Fair Lawn Council recently recognized John Gaten, a borough resident who was taken as a POW during World War II.

Gaten was taken prisoner by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge when he was 19 years old. He spent four months in POW camps. He described his experience to Patch earlier this year.

The borough council presented Gaten, 90, with a proclamation thanking him for his service during their September 10 meeting.

Gaten returned the feeling of gratitude.

"I really am happy to receive this and I thank the people of Fair Lawn for giving me this honor," Gaten said.
