Pedestrian Safety Grant Will Improve Warren Point School Intersection

The borough has received another grant from the state to make pedestrian safety improvements along the Broadway corridor.

"We're very pleased that we received that money and I'm sure we'll be putting it to good use," Mayor Jeanne Baratta said at Tuesday's council meeting. "The council sends our thanks to Governor Christie for giving us $146,000 that we didn't have."

Deputy Mayor Ed Trawinski said the Broadway Improvement Corporation, of which he is a borough liaison, was looking to use the money for traffic calming devices near .

"The Broadway Improvement Corporation prioritized the Broadway intersections based upon the master plan report that it received from the planner and the number one priority for which they authorized the approach for additional grant funding is the Warren Point intersection," Trawinski said.

Resident Pamela Coles expressed gratitude that the money would go toward that intersection, which she said was a major safety hazard.

"When parents have to park at an already busy corner and then have to navigate small children across four lanes of highway with people rushing to work, that's not a great site," she said. "That corner is in dying need, so whatever we can do there."

Trawinski said there are also a couple of other areas along Broadway, in addition to the 30th Street intersection, where the Broadway Improvement Corporation would like to install traffic calming devices.
